The Eco Atkins Diet

The Eco Atkins Diet

The Eco Atkins diet represents a variation of the low-carbohydrate Atkins diet. Unlike the original, which permitted consumption of meats and dairy products, the Eco Atkins diet is addressed to vegetarians. David Jenkins, the creator of this diet, concluded that replacing the source of proteins in the Atkins diet can actually bring you more benefits.

The Premise

The goal of the diet is to focus on protein sources other than meat. David Jenkins realized that soy food and nuts, while still rich in proteins and fats, can actually help you lose weight and stay healthier than eating meat. Such effects are explained by the high content of monounsaturated fats. Proteins, on the other hand, induce a feeling of saturation, so a greater intake of proteins will in fact help you eat less food, overall.

In a study conducted by Professor David Jenkins, the subjects lost 10 percent of their weight in 28 weeks. This is not a diet that guarantees you the loss of a certain number of pounds over a certain period of time. The fact that you lose such a percentage of your weight is certainly promising. You can actually continue the diet until you achieve your target weight.

The Diet

The sources of protein in the Eco Atkins diet are represented by:

  • Gluten
  • Nuts
  • Soy food

According to the founder of this diet, the total amount of protein needs to be around 150 g each day. Gluten is available either canned or chilled in numerous stores that sell Asian food. In fact, this type of food is widely used in the Asian cuisine. If gluten is not among the foods that you enjoy, you can always replace it with the following legumes:

  • Beans
  • Chickpeas
  • Lentils

As an additional alternative to gluten, you can increase the amount of nuts and seeds that you consume. These represent important sources of monounsaturated fats, which are actually good for your body. Other sources of such healthy fats include:

  • Avocado
  • Canola oil
  • Olive oil

As far as the duration of the diet, there is no limit. You can follow it for as long as you like, or in other words, until your goal weight is achieved.

What to Get Excited Over

As nuts contain healthy fats, they represent an excellent food if you want to lose weight. Besides that, it has been demonstrated in numerous studies conducted in the US that vegetarians are able to lose weight faster than meat eaters. Besides helping you to lose weight, the Eco Atkins diet will also enhance your insulin sensitivity, thus decreasing the risk of diabetes. In addition to that, the blood levels of LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol are also lower, fact that does not happen when following a diet that includes meat.

Things to Consider

While the Eco Atkins diet emphasizes the fact that proteins are better than carbohydrates in a diet, you are highly recommended not to neglect the latter. It is best not to exaggerate with the protein intake. When the protein exceeds 30 percent of the calories, toxic ketones will start to accumulate. In order to eliminate these compounds from your body, the kidneys need to do extra work. As a result, the quantity of water that gets eliminated along with these ketones increases dramatically, fact that leads to dehydration.

Verdict

The Eco Atkins diet is certainly a viable alternative to the Atkins diet. It provides plenty of valuable nutrients and fats, so you can lose weight and prevent heart conditions in a healthy manner. Regular consumption of meat and dairy products increases cholesterol levels, which means that there is a greater risk of heart diseases and obesity. However, you are recommended to talk to a dietitian before starting such a diet, especially if an increased protein intake and a decreased carbohydrate intake can cause you harm.
