The Benefits of Fish Oil for Blood Circulation

The Benefits of Fish Oil for Blood Circulation

Almost every dietitian or nutritionist will tell you that eating fish is good for your health. It is rich in proteins, vitamins and minerals, with a relatively low calorie count. But it's the fish oil that really make them so beneficial to your health. Studies have found that people who regularly eat fish or take fish-oil supplements have lower potentials for cancer, stronger immune systems and better looking skin. And the most important benefit of all--fish oil can significantly reduce your chances for heart attacks and strokes.

Stronger and More Elastic Blood Vessels

The most direct cause of heart attacks and strokes is the breakage of blood vessels. Hemorrhage usually occurs at the weakest point of the blood vessels where the lining is thinnest and most fragile to sudden changes of pressure. Fish oil contains high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, DHA and EPA. These are powerful antioxidants that bind to the surfaces of your cells to protect them from being attacked by lipid free radicals. This prevents the membranes from severing. Their attachment also make the cell membranes more fluid so that they move more freely against each other. This fluidity allows them to respond better under changes of pressure. Increasing the amount of omega-3 fatty acids give the cells that line your blood vessels more protection and more flexibility, effectively reducing the chances of hemorrhage.

Better Blood Profile

The other major cause of hemorrhage is the formation of blockages inside your blood vessels. These blockages are due to a buildup of fatty deposits, triglycerides and cholesterol.  Omega-3 fatty acids have two vital functions that enable them to prevent blood vessel blockage, removing preexisting deposits and preventing new deposits from forming.

Omega-3 fatty acids can increase the level of high density lipoproteins (HDL) which are your “good cholesterol.” They travel through your bloodstream and pickup triglycerides and all other forms of cholesterol and deliver them to your liver for excretion or reprocessing. Increasing the amount of HDL in your blood can not only prevent new deposits from forming, they can also effectively clean out any preexisting deposits. In addition, studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids can effectively lower the amount of triglycerides in your blood, further lowering the chances for blood vessel obstructions.

More Fluid Blood Flow

Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids can effectively reduce the amount of fibrin in your blood. Fibrin is a type of fibrous protein that is involved in the formation of blood clots. Higher levels of fibrin make your blood cells more likely to coagulate which can impede your blood flow. Having more omega-3 fatty acids in your blood makes your blood more viscous, better protecting you from heart attacks.

Lower Blood Pressure

Having high blood pressure can be extremely damaging to your health. Studies have shown that omega-3 fatty acids can effectively lower your blood pressure, which is another safeguard against strokes and heart attacks.

Many studies have been conducted towards the discovery of other health benefits from fish oil supplements, but there is no doubt that they play a big roll in promoting cardiovascular health.
