Researchers have identified antioxidants in red wine, such as flavonoids and resveratrol, that have many health benefits. Flavonoids are antioxidants that are actually found in higher levels in red wine than other foods, such as grape juice and oranges. Resveratrol is another antioxidant found in high levels in red wine that helps prevent damage to blood vessels and reduces bad cholesterol.
Red wine also contains polyphenols, which are found in plants, and help prevent UV damage from the sun. These polyphenols have antioxidant benefits when absorbed by the body. Polyphenols are also present in beer, but red wine contains about 20 times more polyphenols.
Antioxidants in Wine vs Beer
Although red wine seemed to have more health benefits than beer, recent studies have shown that this is not necessarily true. Beer seems to have the same antioxidant effects as red wine. Researchers have discovered that one serving of wine or beer gives the body equal increases of plasma antioxidant activity. This helps to prevent the oxidization of blood plasma by free radicals that are associated with many conditions, such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes.
Both wine and beer contain polyphenols, which are found in plants. These polyphenols have antioxidant benefits when they are consumed and absorbed by the body. Although red wine has a higher polyphenol content than beer, both beverages have equal effects of absorption in the body.
