Richard Simmons Diet

Richard Simmons Diet

Few dietary plans have had as many followers or the longevity of the Richard Simmons Diet. Commonly referred to as a "diet and exercise guru," Richard Simmons has been motivating people to loss weight and get healthy since the 1970s.

The Premise: Simmon's plan creates a trio that consists of healthy, portion-controlled meals, daily exercise, and positive motivation. With a website that features everything from online web chats with Simmons himself, to a specific "Food Mover" diet plan and the Groove & Lose Plan, there is an abundance of tools to motivate dieters to lose the weight, get healthy, and stay fit for life.

The Diet:  The Richard Simmons Plan encourages you to "Take Control of your Fitness Destiny" with three key elements:

  • Daily exercise: Simmons has numerous aerobic exercise videos to help you get your heart rate up and burn calories.
  • The Food Moving Plan: This tracks your food intake to teach you how many calories you can eat. It is determined by your activity level, the foods you eat (starches, fruits, vegetables, dairy, fats), and even the amount of water you drink.
  • Daily motivational tips:  Especially on his web site, Simmons provides tips to keep you motivated and moving forward everyday. This includes online web chats Simmons conducts himself.

What to get excited about: Richard Simmons and his specific fitness techniques have been around for years, boasting an impressive track record of success. The plan is flexible and effective for both males and females, and you can benefit from it whether you're young, old, slightly overweight, or obese. The weight-loss plan is designed for steady weight-loss of 1 to 2 pounds a week, with a strong emphasis on exercise. The Food Mover plan is easily adjustable for restaurants or home-prepared meals. And to top it off, the quirky, upbeat motivation from Simmons himself is featured in all of his exercise videos, on his website, and in his books.

Things to consider: While the Simmons plan is a proven, healthy weight-loss program, it does not advertise speedy results. While Simmons is interested in giving dieters life-long skills for eating and living healthy, this is not the diet for someone looking for a quick-fix. The plan does discourage alcohol consumption, caffeine intake, and it requires a fair amount of food tracking. Another downside may be the guru himself. Although his personal exercise guidance can be highly motivational to some, others may find his unique manner irritating and annoying.

The Verdict: If Richard Simmons and his off-beat, overly perky personality doesn't get on your nerves, this could be a successful plan for you. There is so much available on the website to keep you interested and motivated, you won't get bored. However, because of the sheer volume of tools available, the savvy dieter needs to careful to not purchase an excessive amount of expensive tools online.

Richard’s food mover plan and encouragement to exercise regularly have proven invaluable to me. I am down 42 lbs. and 5 pant sizes in 9 months. It has been so exciting.

    Thank you, Richard Simmons!

The food mover is a great tool to have if you want to do the food exchange plans. The diabetic plan works well with it and the TOPS food exchange both seem to be pretty much the same as Richard Simmons plan and they are proven to be great plans for losing weight and eating healthy portions of all the food groups.
