The Raw Food Diet encourages you to eat mostly raw foods, and avoid foods which have been heavily processed. This includes all sugary foods and drinks, as sugar is heavily processed. But, overcoming the sugar cravings is one of the hardest parts about transitioning to the Raw Food Diet, as the temptations are everywhere.
A sugar craving can occur at a moment when you least expect it, and therefore you need to be on guard for them at all times. Keeping a journal of when you have your cravings will help you to pin-point the situations in your life which trigger them.
Here are ways to satisfy your sugar cravings on the Raw Food Diet:
Don’t Skip Meals
One of the best ways to satisfy sugar cravings is to never allow yourself to go hungry. This means you should never skip a meal, and always carry a goody bag of your favorite healthy snacks to take with you to work, while traveling, or when visiting with family or friends.
Use Natural Sweeteners
Use Stevia or another natural sweetener to put into your drinks such as coffee, tea or even to your water.
Drink lots of water to keep from dehydrating, as this is often the cause of sugar cravings.
Drinking lots of freshly pressed fruit and vegetables juices made right in your own kitchen can also help to reduce your cravings by providing you with proper nutrients.
High Fiber Foods
Eating high fiber foods such as fruits and vegetables help to remove the toxins and acids in the body which often cause sugar cravings.
Plan Your Meals
Plan your meals before you get hungry, as this will result in healthier meals.
Don’t Keep Treats in the House
Do not keep any kind of sugary treats in the house. You are less likely to go down to the corner store to pick up what you want than to head for the cupboards or fridge.
Reduce your stress either by eliminating the stressor, or by learning to manage your stress, as it can also cause you to reach for the candy bar as well. This is because sugar contains serotonin which is a chemical that helps you relax in tough situations. Getting lots of sleep will also help to eliminate stress, and you will have more willpower to withstand those sweet temptations.
Boredom is another enemy which can cause you to crave for sugar. Getting lots of exercise and picking up a new hobby will help you to overcome this.
When temptation hits, walk away. Go for a walk, make a phone call, or do whatever it takes to get your mind off of food.
Carry a pack of your favorite gum with you, as research has shown that it can reduce your sugar cravings.
Sugar is addictive, so naturally the more you have the more you will crave it. By reducing your intake in small amounts, you can eventually kick the habit.
You should never attempt to cut sugar out all at once, as this may cause you to binge afterwards. You should not feel guilty when you have a sugary snack, but rather you should praise yourself for consuming less than you did the day or week before.
