Pros and Cons of the Clean Program

The Clean Program is a 21-day diet created by Dr. Alejandro Junger, who is a cardiologist in New York City. Dr. Junger states that numerous health conditions, including allergies, headaches, irritable bowel syndrome, fatigue, weight gain, depression and insomnia are caused by a toxic buildup in the human body. The aim of this diet is to help restore the healthy function of the body. This is achieved through three phases: remove toxins, restore lacking nutrients and restore energy.

Pro: Mild Detox

While on the Clean Program, dieters are not expected to switch to a complete liquid diet. When on this diet, dieters will have a liquid breakfast, a solid meal for lunch and a liquid dinner. Liquid diets can be created by blending fruits and vegetables or by drinking recommended meal replacement shakes.

Pro: Based on Science

The Clean Program is based on scientific research that shows environmental toxins such as pesticides, metals, drugs and industrial compounds, lead to a host of medical conditions. Research shows that by completing a detoxification program, individuals are able to slow the progress of certain diseases and conditions associated with environmental toxins.

Pro: Maintain Normal Life

Due to the mild nature of the Clean Program, dieters should be able to still consume an adequate number of calories, fat, nutrients, vitamins and minerals to maintain daily function. Due to its mildly restrictive nature, dieters should still be able to workout and maintain daily activity while on the Clean Program.

Pro: Maintain Muscle Mass

Unlike so many other detoxes, the Clean Program allows for dieters to consume an adequate amount of protein. This should help prevent dieters from losing muscle mass. The loss of muscle mass can negatively affect an individual’s metabolism rate, and therefore slow down weight loss.

Pro: Recommends Sunlight

Surprisingly, the Clean Program recommends that individuals get at least 15 minutes of sunlight exposure a day. Individuals are able to increase their body’s levels of vitamin D through exposure to the sun. Vitamin D is essential for bone strength and is believed to help lower risk of certain cancers.

Pro: Exercise Plan

The Clean Program recommends that individuals increase their daily activity while on this diet.  The diet recommends walking as much as possible and taking the stairs instead of the elevator. While no specific exercise plan is outline on the program, the Clean Program does stress physical activity.

Con: Expensive

One of the main recommendations of the Clean Program is for dieters to consume supplements to help replenish depleted nutrients. These supplements may be expensive and will increase the overall cost of this diet.

Con: Electrolyte Imbalance

The Clean Program recommends the use of colonics and laxatives. The excessive use of both of these products has created adverse effects in some patients. They can lead to an electrolyte imbalance. Symptoms of an electrolyte imbalance include irregular heartbeat, confusion, weakness, fatigue and blood pressure changes.

Overall, the Clean Program diet is a well-balanced detox program that should be gentle and mild on the body. For most individuals, there are few negative side effects from the Clean Program diet, and this may help many individuals lose weight and jumpstart a healthier lifestyle.
