The Atkins diet is a diet plan that has become widely popular, but is hugely controversial due to the strict nature of the diet. To conform to the Atkins diet, you need to cut way back on the amount of carbohydrates you consume. This then forces the body to use stored fat as energy, thus reducing the amount of fat in the body. As with all diets, there are many pluses and many minuses to this diet. Atkins is not a diet for everyone, but there are people who have lost and kept off large amounts of weight from following this eating plan.
Pro: The Thrill of Eating Forbidden Foods
The Atkins diet cuts down on the amount of carbohydrates eaten. Foods that are low in carbohydrate content include steaks, meats, butter and cream. These types of foods are not usually allowed on a diet and can make the dieter feel like they are sneaking in food when they are following the diet properly.
With the limited amount of foods allowed, especially starting out, eating can become very boring. The Induction phase is the first phase and that is the phase where the least amount of carbohydrates are allowed. There are only so many food combinations that can be created from the food list, and meals can become very repetitious.
Pro: Easy Concept
The main idea behind the Atkins diet is very simple and does not take much time to learn. Once the concept is learned, it is very easy to follow. It may take some time to learn how to calculate the net carb count, but once it is learned, counting carbs eaten in a day is simple.
Con: Carbohydrate Counting
As simple of a concept as counting carbohydrates is, it can become a huge pain to count the amount of carbs in every single thing that is eaten. Since only a certain amount of carbohydrates are allowed each day, it is vital to be as exact as possible when counting, and this task can become very stressful. Counting becomes extra hard when eating out at restaurants or fast food places because not all of these places will have all of the nutrition information readily available.
Pro: Very Popular Diet
The Atkins diet has been around for awhile and is very well known. Most people, if you were to ask them, will know the basic concept behind how the diet works. Because of its popularity, it is very easy to find lots on information on Atkins. There are numerous websites set up on how the diet works and there are sites for support. Bookstores and libraries will carry books about the diet. Someone you know will have done the diet and be able to give you their opinion on it.
Con: Increased Saturated Fats
Because this diet encourages you to eat fats and proteins, and consume things like meat and cheese, you will increasing your daily saturated fat intake. This could lead to heart disease and other diseases. Also, because of the high protein intake required, this diet is not recommended for people with liver or kidney problems.
