Lose Water Weight With These Helpful Steps

Many women are looking for ways to lose water weight. This water weight, or water retention, can be caused by many factors including:

  • hormones
  • too much sodium in one’s diet
  • prolonged standing
  • sunburns
  • nutritional deficiency 
  • side effects of some medications

Helpful Step #1: Examine Your Diet

You should begin looking at your diet, if you want to lose water weight.  First, really examine the amount of sodium you take in on one day. This amount should be limited, as well as your sugar intake. You may also want to increase the amount of water you drink. This may sound strange since you are retaining water, but not having enough water in your system can actually cause your body to bloat and retain the little of water it has (this is a side effect of being dehydrated). Once you begin hydrating your body, this bloat may begin to subside. Green tea and other herbal teas are also good drink choices.

As for the foods you eat, fruits and vegetables are great choices. Good starchy carbohydrates are other good choices, in small amounts.

Helpful Step #2:  Consider Using Water Pills

Many women will take water pills as a fast way to lose water weight. These can be bought over the counter at most drug stores (found in the diet aisle).  Water pills makes the kidneys work more, meaning they tell the kidneys to excrete sodium as well as water from them. Their proper name is diuretics.

Long term use of water pills is not recommended. They can cause blood pressure to lower, cause an imbalance in our electrolytes, and can even cause other health problems. For this reason, one should only take water pills for a short-term basis and not try to use them as a way to lose weight.

Helpful Step #3:  Consider Using Natural Diuretics

There are many types of natural diuretics that can help you to lose water weight. Yet, you should keep in mind that although these methods are considered natural, they are still considered diuretics. For this reason, they still should only be used on a short-term basis. These choices can include: 

  • apple cider vinegar
  • cranberry juice
  • dandelion
  • fennel
  • nettle
  • parsley

Helpful Step #4:  Make Healthy Diet Choices

Making healthy diet choices is the best way to lose water weight, lessen bloating, and limit any further health problems. For this reason, remember to lower your sodium intake, lower your sugar intake, and drink those glasses of water throughout the day.
