How to Make an Organic Hair Mask

To keep your hair healthy and shiny, sometimes it’s necessary to head to the salon for a hair mask treatment. These hair treatments are often very pricey, however you can create your own hair mask at home with ingredients found in your very own kitchen. Not only is this a cheaper alternative to commercial treatments, it’s actually more advisable since you will be using all-natural ingredients on your hair.

Benefits of Hair Masks

Hair masks can help maintain the balance of nutrients in your hair, and also help maintain your hair's healthy shine. Hair masks usually come in the form of creams, balms, or lotions that you apply thoroughly to your hair. Sometimes, it can be necessary to wrap the hair in plastic wrap after applying the treatment to give the mixture better chances of taking effect. Other times, you merely have to leave the cream on for several minutes.

There are many types of hair masks for different needs. Some hair masks are simply for making your hair softer and shinier, while others are designed to help repair damaged hair and eradicate split ends. Still others work to prevent dandruff or lice. Whichever treatment you need, there is an organic recipe to whip up the appropriate mask in your own home.

Going Organic

You can always go to a store or salon for your hair masks, but using all-natural ingredients at home is best--and cheaper. Most common ingredients for hair masks can be found in your kitchen. These include eggs, mayonnaise, yogurt, olive oil, castor oil, honey, and sometimes avocado and aloe vera.

Hair Mask Recipes

Here are just a few of the basic hair mask recipes that you can try at home. Each caters to different needs, but all can be created using organic ingredients.

  • For deep conditioning: Mix together some avocado with a cup of real mayonnaise. Apply thoroughly from your scalp to your hair tips. Cover your hair with plastic wrap or a shower cap. Leave the mask on for half an hour, then remove the plastic wrap and rinse your hair thoroughly.
  • For all hair types: Combine 1/4 banana, 1/4 cantaloupe, and 1/4 avocado with a tablespoon of yogurt, and mix in a tablespoon of wheat germ oil or olive oil. Blend it together in a bowl or in a blender. Apply this mixture all over your hair and leave it on for 14 minutes.  After that, wash your hair thoroughly with shampoo.
  • For dry hair: In a bowl, beat one whole egg and add a cup of pure mayonnaise. Finish the mask by mixing in a tablespoon of olive oil, and a tablespoon of castor oil. Apply this mask to your hair and then wrap it in plastic wrap or use a shower cap. After an hour, remove the plastic wrap or shower cap and wash your hair with shampoo.
