Swimming is a great way to lose 20 pounds. It is a great exercise and it is good on your muscles. The water greatly reduces the pressure on your joints, making it a lot easier to perform the exercise. Swimming or water aerobics are also great for people with arthritis.
Risks of Swimming Pools
There are a few risks to consider when thinking about starting a water-based program for exercise. The most common problem is diarrhea illness caused by swallowing the pool water. Contaminated water may also cause other problems including infections in the ears, eyes, nose, and open cuts or wounds. You want to be very careful in keeping the water out of your mouth. If you experience infections in your ears, nose, and eyes you should see a doctor. Even though there are risks with swimming pools, swimming is a great exercise for your body.
How to Get Started
To get started all you need is a swimming suit and a pool. A local swimming pool works great, or if you have your own swimming pool that’s even better. Most local pools have early hours for those just swimming laps to decrease the pool traffic.
Start off by swimming for 10 minutes as a warm up before swimming fast to avoid any injury. Then after warming up start off swimming laps for about 20 minutes then gradually increase your time as you get used to it. You should start off by doing this three times a week. Then you can work your way up to five–or if you want to, you can even swim everyday. After you are used to swimming laps and you start to increase the time you are swimming, the weight will start to come off. To increase your weight loss and build muscle, try using paddles or plastic bells. Your chances of losing weight increase dramatically when exercise is combined with a good diet. If you get bored with just swimming laps, try switching things up a bit. Swim a couple of regular laps, then try swimming one without the use of your arms–only kicking.
Other Ways to Lose Weight in a Swimming Pool
If you do not like to swim laps or if you do not know how to swim, there are other ways to use the benefits of a swimming pool to lose weight. Water aerobics are a great way to lose weight also. All you need is some basic knowledge of how to perform them. For starters, try running in the water or if you have kids take them to the pool with you. Chasing them around will definitely burn the calories. The water will act as resistance against your body and help burn more calories.
Swimming is a great way to burn calories and work off some of that extra weight. The water is good for people with arthritis, aches and pains, and even for pregnant women. If you have a medical condition, you should check with your doctor before starting a water program.
