At any given season, chapped lips can be a problem for most people. Whether it’s the heat that’s drying out your skin, or the winter weather that’s posing harsh threats, chapped lips can be a recurring problem all year round. When lips are chapped they tend to dry up, crack, get flaky and peel–and the hardest part is that it can hurt.
What Causes Chapped Lips?
There are many factors that can contribute to chapped lips. One of which could be the weather. Whether it’s too hot or too cold, both conditions can cause your lips to crack and peel. Another common cause is dehydration and poor diet. Your body may lack the essential fatty acids and some vitamins, or you may generally be drinking too little water. Chapped lips can also be an allergic reaction to certain chemicals in cosmetics. You may be using a lipstick that doesn’t suit your skin type.
Prevention of Chapped Lips
Before you get to the problem of chronic chapped lips, take some preventive measures first. One of the culprits of chapped lips is lip-licking. Avoid licking and wetting your lips, as this tends to dry them out. Consistent use of lip balm that contains cocoa butter or beeswax may help in preventing chapped lips. Humidity can also be a factor that can dry out your skin. Try placing dehumidifiers around your home. Remember to keep yourself hydrated at all times. Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. Also, watch what you eat. Proper nutrition is important in keeping your skin healthy. Take vitamin supplements if you think you may lack some nutrients, and keep to a diet that’s high in calcium and magnesium.
Heal Chronic Chapped Lips
If you’re already faced with the problem of chronic chapped lips, there are several ways to alleviate the discomfort and hopefully heal your cracked and dried lips.
- Use lip balm frequently. Look for one that contains beeswax or cocoa butter, and avoid those that contain the chemicals phenor or camphor.
- Try this home treatment for chapped lips: mix together 2 drops of glycerin and 1 teaspoon of milk cream. Apply to your lips and leave overnight.
- If you want to alleviate the pain of chronic chapped lips, try rubbing some unsalted butter on them. You will find that this gives you instant relief. Another option is to rub a couple of drops of olive oil on your lips. Do this as often as needed.
- Petroleum jelly also has been proven to help cure and prevent chapped lips. It also gives off a natural sheen that makes your lips look luscious and glossy.
- If your lips have gotten very flaky, exfoliate them every night. Use a warm, soft terry cloth or towel and gently rub away at your lips. You can also use a toothbrush, but be sure to be gentle so as not to crack your lips further.
