How Switching to Organic Food Can Affect Weight

Organic food is produced according to production standards set by national governments and international organizations. Such food is considered safer and more nutritious than food produced by non-organic methods using pesticides or intensive farming processes.

Although organic food is more expensive, it’s advisable to switch to a diet consisting of organic food because it is non-toxic and protects you from diseases caused by the consumption of chemicals contained in processed foods. Foods produced by non-organic methods contain substantial amounts of additives and preservations. Organic food is rich in dietary fiber and is easier to digest. Such food breaks down easily and there is a complete absorption of nutrients by the body.

All foods that are metabolized completely are not stored as fat by the body. Processed food, on the other hand, is much more difficult to metabolize, and a significant portion is stored as fat by the body.

Organic Food and Weight Loss Plans

A good weight loss program should consist of a diet based on organic foods and regular exercise. Organic food is very efficiently metabolized by the body, and if a diet of organic food is substantiated by a proper exercise program, the metabolization of the food is faster and more complete. This results in the burning of significant amounts of fat by the body, resulting in significant weight loss.

Disadvantages of Organic Foods

Organic foods are more expensive than foods produced using non-organic methods. The amount of calories contained in both organic and non-organic foods are the same. Some dietitians are of the opinion that it’s more advisable to buy food that’s home grown than organic foods grown in faraway countries. This is because such food is stale by the time it’s consumed. Such food also needs to be transported over long distances, and this can be detrimental to the environment because it requires the utilization of a lot of petroleum to have the food transported.

Rather than focusing on organic and non-organic food, you should try to include a lot of vegetables and fruits in your diet. The dietary fiber in these fruits and vegetables can inhibit you from eating too much.

Is Organic Food Superior?

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) labels foods that are free of synthetic ingredients and those that are grown, harvested and processed according to national standards as organic foods. Meat products can be considered organic if the animals they come from have never received growth hormones or antibiotics. The USDA does not state that organic foods are more nutritious or safer for consumption than non-organic foods.

If you do choose to go the organic way in terms of the food you consume, you should ensure that you continue to exercise regularly. Many people feel that they have done their bit toward losing weight by opting for organic food and decide to stop exercising. This should be avoided, because doing so will be self-defeating and result in no loss of weight.
