Eating too little means you’re not getting the nutrients you need in order to be healthy and energetic. It weakens your body and your immune system, and over time it can lead to many complications that can turn serious, such as heart problems.
Eating too much can also be a problem, especially if you’re reaching for comfort foods. These sorts of food are usually full of unhealthy additives, while possessing little to none of the nutrients you actually need. Over indulging in food – especially things like chips, candy, ice cream and other “feel-good” foods – can bring about weight gain and can lead to all sorts of problems later on down the line if it gets out of hand, such as nutritional deficiencies and diabetes.
Another common change during heartbreak occurs to your sleeping habits. People who are upset and down tend to sleep either too much or too little. Both are changes that can cause problems to your health and lead to a loss of energy and weakness in your body. Sleeping too much or too little can make things on your harder mentally, since both will cause crankiness and can actually worsen depression. Both are vicious cycles. Over-sleeping results in the body feeling constantly tired, while not sleeping enough obviously makes your body tired, too.

When you’re under stress, your body reacts in order to try to help you cope with it. Namely, your body releases a chemical known as cortisol, which is meant to help you stay on your feet and react quickly. In small amounts, this chemical is helpful in dealing with tough situations, but if it’s left running for too long, it can become problematic.
If you find yourself in a constant state of upset and stressed over your heartbreak, it can wear on you. You’re always tense, you’re always on edge, and that’s taking up a lot of your energy. If left unchecked, it can cause a variety of problems from headaches and muscle aches to digestive problems and a weakened immune system.

In order to keep any negative impacts to your health over heartbreak to a minimum or non-existent, it is important to take care of yourself. If you notice yourself engaging in any of the behaviors that can have a serious adverse effect to your health, try to change that behavior. If you can, find something to distract you; something positive to focus your energies on. If it becomes too much for you to handle on your own, then seek out the help of friends, family or a trusted professional. It is important that you don’t let yourself go, because your health could wind up paying for it.
