Goji berries, or wolf berries, are small exotic fruits grown in the Himalayas and are believed to be one of the reasons why the Tibetans, Mongolians and Chinese have traditionally lived healthy lives over the years. The berries are usually eaten when dried, and they resemble raisins except for their deep bright red color. Because goji berries are loaded with vitamins, minerals and amino acids, they can be a perfect replacement for many multivitamin supplements.
Aside from their nutritional contents, goji berries are also said to be effective for weight control. Here is why goji berries help keep off those unwanted pounds.
1. High Fiber Content
Goji berries are rich in fiber. Foods high in fiber give you the bulk you need, so you feel full without having to eat a lot. Fiber also moderates blood sugar levels. If there is no spike in blood sugar, there is no extra production of insulin, which stores fats instead of allowing them to be converted into energy.
2. Low Glycemic Index
Glycemic index (GI) is a numerical scale that measures the speed at which food is converted into glucose. Goji berries have a GI of 29, one of the lowest (the highest being 100), which means they are converted into blood sugar slowly, thereby preventing uncontrollable urges to eat.
3. Help Alleviate Stress
Goji berries are adaptogens – herbs or plants that increase the body’s resistance to stress, trauma or anxiety – and, therefore, they reduce the impact of stress by lowering the levels of cortisol, the hormone produced by the adrenal glands when you are stressed. Lower cortisol levels mean your body burns fat instead of storing it.
4. Prevent Muscle Loss
Goji berries are a good source of chromium, which preserves lean muscle mass. As you lose weight, your muscles tend to become smaller. However, muscles burn more calories than fat, so with more lean muscles you have a more efficient metabolic system.
Other Fat-Burning Fruits
Goji berries do not just grow anywhere. If you do not have access to them, there are other fruits more readily available that are just as effective in burning fat.
1. Blackberries: Blackberries may not be available year-round, but when there is an abundant supply, you can enjoy your share. Blackberries have just been recently discovered as effective in burning fat. Like goji berries, they are high in fiber and contain pectin, which also regulates blood sugar levels.
2. Bananas: Aside from carbohydrates, bananas contain “resistant starch,” an indigestible fiber that ferments in the large intestine, creating by-products that block the conversion of some carbohydrates into fuel, thus forcing the body to burn stored fats.
3. Apples: Apples are low-calorie fruits that help maintain blood sugar at normal levels. They are rich in fiber and are perfect to assuage hunger pangs because they have no saturated fat, cholesterol or sodium.
4. Citrus Fruits: Examples of citrus fruits are oranges, grapefruits, tangerines, lemons and limes. They contain high concentrations of vitamin C, which can liquefy fats, making it easier to flush them out instead of storing them in the body.
