OKAY...I need some Dr. Phil peeps to hang with!!!
Hey hey....I see there hasn't been a ton of action on this particular board, but I would like to change that. I am almost through with my first read of Dr. Phil's book, and I would like to get a "book club" going, if you will, of others who are reading, have read, and want to implement the keys into their lives. I would be willing to take charge of posting discussion threads about the keys, and we can answer each others questions and such...whaddya say? Any takers??

I'm sorry you haven't been getting any responses. I haven't ever seen his show or read any of his books. What is it like? Can you give a bit of a snapshot?

LOL thanks Nancy...I just like being a bit dramatic, that's all!
Dr. Phil's book, the ultimate weight solution, covers seven keys to weight loss freedom. All of the keys deals exclusively with the behavrioral aspect of weight loss....why we do what we do, why we eat what we do...and how do we deal with the patterns that have developed.
Instead of a lot of speeches about willpower and a list of foods you can eat, it delves into the "whys" of weight gain and then helps with the "hows" to change.
Here is a quick guide to the book:
Part One: Talks about getting real about your weight and what got you to this point. It also focuses on what he calls "get real expectations." In other words, not setting yourself up for failure because you set your goals to broad or too high...
Part Two: Talks about the Seven Keys to Weight Loss Freedom
Key 1: RIght Thinking....helps you understand why you do what you do, and how to get a hold of your self control.
Key 2: Healing Feelings....helps you to sort out and understand the feelings that go along with your current habits, and how to make the positive changes to better emotional control.
Key 3: A No-Fail Environment....helps you to recognize what in your environment enables you to keep doing what you are doing...and how to change your environment to get a better grip on external control.
Key 4: Mastery over food and Impulse eating...helps you to recognize your triggers and help you to eliminate or change those triggers to better help your habit control
Key 5: High Response Cost/High-Yield Nutrition...helps you to improve your eating habits by putting foods into categories based on their cost (calories) and their nutrition....shows you don't have to eliminate any food from your daily diet as long as you consider the cost....it helps develop food control.
Key 6: Intentional Exercise...helps you understand the importance of exercise in your life and in your road to good health. Helps you understand why you don't do enough..or any at all...and helps you regain body control
Key 7: Your circle of support....helps you evaluate the people around you and whether or not they are contributing to who you are...and how to change that....to help garner social control (I haven't read this far yet)
Part Three are some insights into Weight Loss and managment, I haven't read that far either....
Its some really great stuff...makes you think about who you are...why you do what you do, and gives you some great ammunition to change the behaviors that need changed (face it, its the hardest part of weight loss...eating the right food is easy - place food on fork - move to mouth - chew...lol...but developing the skills and habits to continuously eat the right foods for you is a whole different ballgame, and, IMO, ultimately what contributes to failure) and really helps to develop a more positive attitude about where you are going in terms of changing your lifestyle...because that is ultimately what it is....a lifestyle change...not a diet!!
Sorry if I babbled....hope this info helps!!

It sounds interesting. I just checked and they have it at my library so I will try and pick it up on Saturday. I'll let you know how it goes.

My thought for today:
THE BATTLE IS WON OR LOST BETWEEN THE EARS.
I spent a great deal of time in Keys 1 and 2. Had to go over and over them...even took a detour thru his book, Self Matters. I am finally seeing all that hard work pay off.
Dr Phil says there is no magic bullet, no easy way. We have to get up off our butts, and bust a sweat! It is hard work, but SO worth it, and it is do-able.
It's taken me quite awhile to hit my stride on this journey, but my best advice to others is: NEVER QUIT!!! NEVER, NEVER, NEVER QUIT. And you WILL make it.

Hi Nancy!
Just thought I would offer my take on WHY the Dr Phil program has worked for me.
I have lost about 100 lbs three times in my life...but didn't KEEP it off...regained that and more back. The reason: it was a DIET. Something you go ON, then go OFF of.
Dr Phil's plan was different for me in 2 regards...
1) It teaches me how to make PERMANENT changes...that I can live with for the rest of my life. He suggests you tailor it to YOU, so you can live the plan permanently. Thus, maintenance is not a problem...keep doing the healthy lifestlye that helped you to LOSE the weight in the first place, and you will automatically maintain.
2) He addresses the WHY. WHY do I use food inappropriately? WHY do I use food as a drug of choice? WHY do I medicate myself with food to feel better? WHY do I soothe myself, entertain myself, comfort myself with food? Then, he teaches healthy replacements for that behavior.
His program is not "new"...I mean he didn't invent these concepts. But he did string them together in an easy to follow plan, with practical do-able assignments, with steps to follow.
Easy? Never. Do-able? Absolutely. Hard work?? YES. Worth it? Oh, YES!!
If you are interested, his book is at the library: The Ultimate Weight Solution.

Hi all -
I managed to pick the book up on Saturday at the library. I spent a few minutes reading the intro that evening but haven't gotten very far yet.
A couple of years ago I did a lot of emotional work while reading Geneen Roth's books. I definitely know that I wouldn't be losing now if I hadn't done that emotional work, but I also know I still have quite a ways to go. It would be great to add some more tools to my toolbox and the book definitely looks like it has some - or at the very least it can help me sharpen the ones I already have.

WOOOOHOOO!!! Someone replied again!!!
Welcome back Nancy, and HEY HEY to Deb and Loretta!!! I am so excited! I am still reading his book, and I plan on going through it a second time and taking extensive notes so I can break it down into a simple outline that I can refer back to...because there is JUST so much information out there.
I am so mad that I didn't buy this book when it first came out. I have bought books in the past and been disappointed because they are always, eat this and eat that, and that's it.....I know all there is to know about the "HOW," I was struggling with the "WHY" no one gives you tools to deal with the "WHY" but Dr. Phil does in this book.
I am going to try to post here every day. (We are going away this weekend, just so I don't look like a liar....LOL) If anyone has a topic to discuss, something they don't understand about the book...put it up in the "TITLE" box above your post...if you are just replying then leave it blank..this way we know..does that make sense?
My hubby and I are trying to have a baby, I have PCOS and I know that my weight is my biggest problem.....if I could get a handle on it, everything else would be much easier...but without dealing with the "WHY" I am never going to be able to do it. It took me 16 years to put on this weight...it ain't comin' off in 16 weeks!! or maybe not even 16 months, but HOPEFULLY less than 16 more years...LOL....
Great hearing from everyone....just join in when you can!!

Hi Julie, thanks for the welcome.
I did that too, especially for Key 2. Just so much there is right! My book is so marked up. I used a different colored highlighter for each time I read it, so it is multi-colored now, LOL!
Hope to chat soon...and hi to Deb and Nancy, too. :-)

Introductions?
Good morning, everyone. :-)
I was wondering if you all would like to do "introductions"?? I'll kick it off......
Okay...I am 55 yrs old, married to a great guy, no kidlets but 2 furbabies (kitties). Been overweight all my life, so I am re-learning a lifetime of habits and wrong interactions with food. I started the Dr Phil plan when he first began the Wt Loss Challenge. I started slow, then sorta got stuck. Sidetracked with "life"...another word for excuses. :-( My Mom got sick, came to live with us, I was caring for her, and she passed. It took me awhile to get back on the program, and stop using ANYTHING as an excuse that would keep me from achieving my goal of regaining my health.
When I started, at 460 lbs., I was using a wheelchair (having lupus complicates things, affecting muscles and connective tissue), and now I have graduated to a walker. Progress!
Over at Dr Phil.com there was a discussion group, the 200 lbs to Lose board, and several of us have kept in touch somewhat. We are doing a 100 Day challenge, and I am doing great with that. We each chose our own goals for the 100 days, and out of my 5 goals, I am doing very well on 4 of them. Still workin' on that fifth one!
The main thing I am working on in my journey to the New Me right now is...CONSISTENCY. I would do well, for short spurts, then goof up my progress for the week with a day or two of bad choices. Now, I am finally learning to be consistent.
Several people I know have been learning the importance of ROUTINES, from Flylady.com. That is one thing that has helped me, getting regular routines set in place that run "automatically", and that don't rely on willpower. Dr Phil talks about that in his book...about re-inventing our life, and structuring it for success, and not depending on willpower. Very important and powerful stuff!
After years of "resistance" to change, my hubby has finally gotten on board. Let me tell ya...it is SO much easier without that resistance!!!!!
Well, so much for me. Anyone else want to introduce themselves to the group?? I'd love to meet you. :-)

Hello,
I think I will mosey on over to the 300+ support group...it seems to be a smidge more chatty than here.
Nice meetin' ya...best wishes to everyone to meet your goals.
