Default Not really a Dr. Phil fan, but....

On his website, his section about weight loss has some points that hit home, especially this article:

http://www.drphil.com/articles/article/63

The part that stands out to me is "What is your payoff for being overweight?" I have been mulling this over in my mind a bit. I think it is a few things, but mostly I think it is a barrier of protection. I grew up abused mentally, physically and sexually, and I think my fat protected me from getting abused longer.

What is YOUR payoff for being overweight?

Talking

Jen415,

It funny you should say that, because he uses that EXACT example in his book that I am currently reading. He has a patient that was sexually abused when she was younger...and they figured out through therapy that keeping herself fat was warding off any possible unwanted male advances, thus protecting her from any more abuse. His book is really amazing, as it focuses directly on the behavioral aspect of weight loss...and the food is just a part of the whole program. It has really hit home with me and I am almost done reading it. I will need to go back and read it again, because there is just so much information, and this time I am going to take good notes and break it down so I can refer back to the points in the book without having to keep reading it over and over. I think Dr. Phil is great and he really did well with this book. You should give it a shot....I think it would be worth it, and if you want to talk about it or anything..I would love to talk too!
