Default Scared of the inevitable plateau...

Hi Everyone -

I just started WW with my friend at school, and we finished our first weeks up with a bang. She lost 6 lbs and I lost 8.5. Yippee!

Although this is total cause for celebration (and believe me, I told everyone!) - I'm dreading the weigh in week where I've either lost nothing or (gulp) gained.

I've tried WW before (though it was unsuccessful as I was being forced into it by my parents when I was 12!) and I know it happens. But I have the personality where, as soon as I stumble, I stop. And binge usually, out of spite (I have Binge Eating Disorder.)

Should I be scared? How do you guys fight the urge to throw in the towel after one disappointing weigh in? I want to start building my defenses before it happens!

I'm on the inevitable plateau now!

Dont cave in. Two quotes have gotten me frothing about the mouth with diet tweaking, work out changes, etc. You just have to mix your dieting/work out routine up to come off the plateau is what I keep hearing. Shock your body back into weight loss. Thats if you dont cave in of course, but keep your eyes on the prize. Not being 12 anymore makes a huge difference and I bet you are a much more logical and goal oriented person now, Binge eater or now. (I am this, too) Thing is, if you mess up or have an off day...just have it. Don't stop the whole shebang for a mess up because they are GOING to happen. Boy, dont I know that for a fact...

Oh yeah,the quotes. Durr.

"Never, never, never give up" and "If you are going through ****, Keep going".

Both Winston Churchill. :3

Oh, and then my mom always said "One monkey don't stop no show".
Savage Southern wit, here.

A plateau and one weigh in where you gain are different. A plateau can be weeks (or months?) where the scale weight doesn't change but inside your body is doing all this other work like building muscle and sprucing up your pancreas and stuff.

I weigh daily at home, so I know my weight fluctuates a little while on a general downward trend. That way, I can see the "gain week" coming, and start figuring out what went wrong (or didn't) and catch it, rather than just spending a whole week fretting about it. A couple of weeks ago I had a 1 pound gain the day of my meeting, which was down again the next day.

My losses have gone like this so far:
-4.4
- .2
- 2
+ 1
- 2.4

But I'm down a total of 8 pounds, which is awesome!

My guess is I'm looking at a small loss this week.

I own my own business, and sometimes things are quiet. If I started packing up and closing the doors I'd miss the next client trying to get in. Same with my weight loss. If I hit a plateau, I've got some tricks up my sleeve - more yoga, heavier weights, different workouts, perseverance, etc.

I can't imagine stopping my Weight Watchers way of eating just because the scale is stubborn. It feels too good to stop.

Default joined too!

I have joined with a friend also, we weigh in Wed evening. I feel lighter, less bloated I know I have lost, been to the gym 4x this week. The scale will not move some weeks that is life. We have to be in for the long haul. Not let 1 week discourage us. This is a lifetime commitment!

@Nebuchadnezzar: Thank you so much for the advice! I will be sure to shake some things up once the weight loss begins to slow. My whole first week I was just using the elliptical - but now I'm adding on racquetball, zumba, and kickboxing. I hope this will help! Also - the Churchill quote about walking through ****? It's my diet motto of the week! Smart and witty! It will definitely keep me going!

@seagirl: 8 pounds? Congratulations! That's awesome! And you're so right about not stopping 'cause I do feel so much better already. I have more energy, my skin is clearing, I feel happier overall. The only thing I sometimes feel (not so happily) is hunger - but it's been years since I've felt truly hungry before eating, and not just "mouth hungry." So it's a feat! LOL.

@terrod: Good luck with everything and the first weigh in! I'm sure you'll have done great - I could tell I lost too when my pants were loose again - and they were TIGHT after the holidays. I'm in it to win it this time, as you seem to be, too. Please keep me updated with your progress! I'm rooting for you!

Hi!

I have been on plan for almost 1 year (3 days it will be exactly 1 year), have lost almost 100lbs and HAVE NOT experienced a plateau. Sure I've slowed down a bit because I'm closer to goal but my weightloss has never come to a halt. In fact last week I lost 5.6lbs, I have no clue how I did it but I was extremely happy!

I went through a few plateaus. The first time I was on the old WW, so I switched to calorie counting - and then came my 6 months plateau. It sucked. I tried new exercises, cycling calories, working out at night instead of in the morning...and my weight didn't budge from May to November. And then, you know, it started to go back down.

Our bodies are funny things, but you just have to stay committed to it. I must say, I didn't lose 1 lb in that time, but I LOOK like I did. I went from a size 12 to a size 8 and if you look at pictures of me from May and pictures of me now, you would think I lost 15 lbs. I've had weeks where I gained weight, yet my pants were falling off of me...

My point is - you shouldn't use the scale number to completely measure your progress - take body measurements and pay attention to the way your clothes fit, and most importantly, how you feel! And remember, even if you're maintaining, you're not GAINING, and that's also important.
