There was a really cute idea on Martha were she baked mini cakes (not cupcakes, bigger) and had the kids each get one to decorate. It was very cute. You could do that and maybe have a pin-yata (sp) for them to hit and break. That could be fun.

What about a bowling party? There are centers here that have bumper bowling for the kids and you can get pizza & pop as part of the package. That way you don't have a mess to contend with afterwards and it gives the kids something to do.

The bowling party is fun and so can an arcade type place durring school hours can be fun as well. A nature walk at a local Auabon or state park with bikes is fun too. Kids that age love to be active. Another idea is a pool party at a local Y.

As far as gifts go we have birthday parties for charity. We collected books last year, but you could collect toys for tots, used winter outgrown cloths for kids that don't have, or food for the homeless. Birthday parties are a great way to teach kids to think about others while they get to enjoy the day for themselve.
