how many times to do arms/legs/core if dumbbell dvd doesn't tell you?

  • Hi--

I just purchased Jackie Warner's terrific dvd (I first previewed on comcast ).

    The dvd's divided into 20-minute sessions: 1 for arms/upper body, 1 for core/stomach area, 1 for legs/lower body.

If the dvd doesn't say how many times to do each session per week to see results, then how many times do I do it to see results?

I typically thought in the past that you had to lift weights three times a week to see results, be it arms or legs, etc.

    Suggestions????

  • I love those Jackie Warner workouts.

You want to wait at least 2 days in between each major muscle group, so I'd probably limit each to 2x per week. You could either do one a day 6 days a week (Abs on Monday and Thurs, UB on Tuesday and Friday, Legs on Wednesday and Saturday), or do all three at once, 2x a week (this is what I do...total body strength training on Tuesdays and Fridays). Either way, you don't want to work a muscle group again without giving it 2 days rest in between.

Have you seen results from only doing each session (UB/LB/Core) 2 times a week from Jackie warner's workouts???

    Huh.

I always thought I had to do it three times a week to see results. This is news to me.

2 times a week for results for each part of your body? I already exercise 6 days a week. It'd be easy to divide up and spread my sessions out for the 6 out of 7 days a week.

    Thanks!
  • I can only speak from my experience - I do two strength sessions a week (and 6 hours of cardio). I definitely have muscle tone, for sure, no question, so you can get results on workouts 2x per week. You can't phone it in, but you CAN get results.

That's great! I mean the point for me of doing dumbbells & weights is to develop muscle tone & mass instead of FAT

*Do you think you get better muscle definition on doing weights over say pilates?

This sounds dorky but what does "you can't phone it in" mean?

  • It's something Jillian Michaels says during her 30-day shred videos. It means you have to be PRESENT. You have to WORK HARD. You have to really kick your own behind.

You're in the room, not "phoning it in"...does that make sense?

  • I lift weights twice a week, one day lower body, one day upper body, and have followed this pattern on and off for years and always get great results with it. I don't enjoy abs work, and tend to stick it at the end of upper body, lay on the floor doing crunches at home, or go to a class that has some abs work in it. Years ago, I used to follow a more complicated workout routine - legs, back and biceps, legs, chest and triceps, legs etc - but was in top shape and training with a man well experienced in body building. These days, two days a week is all I need.

What the previous poster is saying is correct about needing time for your muscles to recuperate in between lifting weights. When you lift weights, you are putting small tears in the muscles and they need time to heal. That is why you need to increase your protein intake as well, to help the body heal.
