Hi - like kathym48, i too am looking for help and direction. Since this thread seems to be post-LB or those already in the process, does anyone know of a thread where those considering this option can discuss and ask questions?

You can ask on this thread or any where on the WLS board (it might be better there, you'll get more recognition there). and good luck !!!!

Default An introdtuction of sorts.

Hi all.
I'm Mary.
I started on my journey to getting a Lapband last December.
I had to go on a 6 month supervised weightloss plan with my PMD.
well, it's now September!!
At my June visit I gave my Dr. my paperwork with what was needed for my surgery to be submitted to my insurance from my surgeon.
They didn't send anything.
At my JULY visit she asks me how everything is going with my surgery plans, I freaked on her a bit and again told her what I needed from them to have my info submitted.
I've been calling since July and they have not even sent ONE progress note to my surgeon.
My PMD is against this surgery. She is anti ANY WLS. I know this, she knows I know it, she still IS however, my Dr and my progress notes are MINE!
She has told me she is against it. We have gone back and forth about it.
I work in the OR plus I have had several surgeries in the last 5 years. I am WELL aware of the risks. She makes me NUTS.
I have sleep apnea, hypertension as co morbs. I'll even take my progress notes to another Dr IF SHE EVER GIVES THEM TO ME!! The 6 months notds plus my co morbs (with sub specialists visits and notes) would be enough for the insurance company.

I am lucky in that I work with my surgeon. They will intervine on my behalf (light a fire under PMD butt).
SOO frustrating.
In the last (8 months now) few months I have a net loss of about 15 pounds. It was up to a 24 lb loss but has rebounded....levelled off.
I walk and exercise everyday. I now logg food and exercise.
I have discovered many tools such as YT and this site plus one or two others.
These tools ARE helping but 15 pounds in 8 months is not good enough for me.
I hope to have news this week.
Last Friday I called yet again...I also called the surgeons coordinator. I should have something by this week.

I REALLY thought i would have an easier road here because I do work with these people.....but HAHAHA on me. It's been one hurdle after another!

Hi Mary,

I'm sorry the process is driving you nuts but good things are worth the wait.

Wow Ilerjo, thats tough dealing with Pred. Ok... so we have to look at high protein low calorie/sugar foods. I know how easy junk goes down, believe me, and when your tired its just all to easy to turn to. Ok, so how about some protein drinks, what if you made a frosty out of them. Or how about some yogurt smoothies with some protein powder in them. I think if you post this question on the regular WLS board, you'll get oodles of responses from even the GBP chicks.

Hello!

I have been considering WLS surgery for several years now. In 2004 I had all steps complete EXCEPT the 6 month's md monitered diet so my insurance denied me. I went back to my dr and started the diet but I ended up tearing an ACL, had two surgeries to repair, ended up going part time, lost my insurance. My DH picked me up on his ins. but it didn't cover. Now I have a new job (well not so new couple years now) but am so frustrated with losing weight and find myself once again considering WLS. I have started the 6 months diet FIRST this time and next month will have my Dr send me on to the surgeon to speak with him. I am worried that I don't weigh enough to have surgery. Last time I was around 228 and this time I am around 212( after several months of struggling on WW). My BMI is not over 35 but around 34.6 for my height. Has anyone ever heard of someone my size have the lap band procedure done. Last time I was cleared by the surgeon, at that point he said he would do either GB or LB. I am worried if I lose any on the 6 months monitored diet I won't qualify.

For me I try to diet (I am the queen of yo-yo dieting) I do lose but VERY slowly get frustrated, give up, gain weight, go back on a diet. It's a vicious cycle. I feel like I need more help than I can do on my own which is why I am considering LB surgery again. I guess I am just scared about qualifying. I want this done NOW, I don't want to be labeled as morbid obese any longer. I want to be healthy. I don't want to shop in the plus sized section. I want to go to the mall and find something that fits. I guess I have a lot of wants! lol

So is there usually a weight you have to be before you qualify? I need to lose around 75 lbs.

Hi Beth,

There's nothing wrong with wanting to be healthy, and wanting to look good. I want too

I'm not sure what your insurance is going to require in order for you to have surgery, but look at it like this, if you ARE losing weight with the 6 month monitored diet, then maybe it will motivate you to do it on your own... That would be awesome right !!!! Also, please be aware that even with the band or gastric you still have to "diet" it is so "SO" easy to eat junk food and gain it back with both surgeries. I'm certainly not trying to discourage you, no way, I'm trying to incourage you and I want you to be aware that surgery doesn't "fix" the brain. The brain also must be trained.

I'm so glad you joined us, please post all your questions, cares, concerns on the regular wls board, the ladies there are so warm and caring and know exactly how you feel. Besides, you'll get lots of feed back there.

and to 3FC's

On my first fill: Dr. put in 3.5 did not feel anything, in fact I could barely notice any difference in eating patterns. Un fortuantely I have been a ble to eat everything: breads, etc.

Second fill: he put in 2.5 more, I felt the restriction and I noticed more of a full filling when I eat.

My third fill is March 21 so will let you know.

It concerns me that so far I can still eat anything. hope that changes

Be patient young grasshopper! (There's a reference that shows my age!) Trust me, you will know when your fill is right. Although, do not be surprised if your band is fickle - some days you will feel fuller than others. I haven't had a fill for three years and my band still lets me know it's in charge. Good luck!

I signed on today and noticed I haven't signed on in over 2 years, boy the time has flown it just seems like a short while ago.
I had my lapband on Dec 23, 2008. I have noticed lately I am craving carbs, can eat large amounts and really struggling. I did pretty good at first but the last couple of weeks find my sliding. I take bile reflux medicine and had stopped that and actually did better on my weight loss, I think it was from the upset stomach no meds causes, I went back on the meds, doctor's advice, and have struggled every since.

I really need to find a supportive group again.

Thanks for listening.

Default Friend is thinking about getting this procedure

I'm posting because a friend of mine is thinking about getting the lap band surgery. I believe she is about around 200 pounds and she wants to lose around 50 pounds. I tried to encourage her to join Weight Watchers with me as another co-worker of our just lost 67 pounds over a 12 month period.

My friend did go to a meeting and get all the information and Starter Kit but she has not started the process. I told her I was starting Weight Watchers this week and if she wanted to kick it off with me, but she told me no, she was going to go to the meeting and find out about the lapband surgery.

I'm posting this because I'm afraid if she goes through with the LB that she might loss more weight then is healthy for her bone structure and height. We both know of a associate who did the Gastric Bypass surgery and lost too much weight for her height and body frame. She does not look good / healthy. I thought she would have better success controlling how much weight she losses via Weight Watchers. She has said to me several times she does not want to drop under 150 pounds, but she may loss more then that via this procedure.

Are my concerns valid?
