HeartBurn related to water intake

Hi Guys,

I am new to the Forum from South Africa.

I had my WLS, 10 April 2013.

First month weight loss so far has been 10kg the last 2 weeks only 1 kg each time. I have been walking 5km each day and started doing light weights to encourage the weight loss.

The only problem I have experienced is that water gives me the most awful heartburn, my dietitian that I still see on a weekly basis along with the specialist say this does happen and suggested that I drink ice tea light. I am sure if I could drink water rather the weight loss would be better.

Anyone else have the same problem?

When I first started drinking water I had the same problem. Eventually I just stuck with it, and I didn't get heartburn anymore. Not sure what happened or changed. I think honestly, my body was so used to soda, it rejected pure water.

daleen - which surgery did you have? i had RNY and to tell the truth, i found that drinking really cold water didn't work for me - it needed to be closer to room temperature. the reason the dietician suggested the light iced tea is that some of us do better with flavored water than with plain water. it's a little weird, i'll admit.

you can also try putting a slice of citrus in the water to give it a different taste - that could work for you.

congrats on the weight loss! are you getting your protein in?

Plain water gave me issues for months and it still can be uncomfortable and I'm almost 2 years out. I drank a lot of Crystal Light at first. Some believe that the density of plain water causes the issue. I have no idea, but still find it weird that plain water made me feel worse than water with chemical sweeteners.

Hi I also had the RNY , I have now started to mix 1/2 water 1/2 light ice tea that seems to be ok. Any more water and I suffer.

Thanks guys.

I current only manage loads of cottage chees (fat free), yogurts, very little other protein. Some chicken and fish but in such small accounts I don't even think it would count as 1gm.

Do need to increase my protein as my hair that was once thick has thinned quite about.

Hair loss after surgery is more than likely Telogen Effluvium. If you google it, you will see that only time helps. With hair regrowth, some people say that Biotin works.

Now, when I was a year out, I was still heavily losing hair. At that point, it was related to protein levels. When I upped my protein, it helped. But really, at the point you are in recovery, nothing really helps stop the loss (as frustrating as that is).
