Besides protein drinks.......

What can you use?

I am contemplating WLS but the more I learn the more I am wondering if it is for me.

I have a real issue with drinking things that taste bad or have a strong smell. I read the prior post on protein drinks and keeping them down....but I'm wondering what else you can use if you can't get them down.

What surgery are you going for? The protein drinks I use don't smell and taste great, my DD loves them. I posted them on the other thread as well.

not all protein drinks are nasty.
and not all surgeons require protein drinks
and even if they do it's not always for a very long time.

I'm concerned because our surgeon wants us on clear liquids for nearly 2 weeks.

I'm looking at the RNY.

I have heard that some Dr. even want their patients to do a 1 week liquid diet prior to surgery.

Leenie I will go back at read about the ones your posted about~

depends on a. the surgeon and b. the patient. I have one friend she is 4 months out... she was liquid 10 days before surgery but was on mushies as soon as she got home. in 4 months she's lost over 100 pounds.

our doc does not do liquid before hand (well 36 hours and then the colon prep).

some do it to shrink the liver.

Nessa's right - all depends on the surgeon. My surgeon did not have me do any sort of special diet before my surgery. The night before surgery, I had a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich, onion rings, and a soda from Whataburger. No oclon cleanse or anything like that for me, either. The only rule was nothing to eat after midnight the night before surgery.

I wouldn't worry about the protein shakes - there have been many before you and will be many after you who never found/find a protein shake they like, and they survived to tell the tale! Once you're past the liquids only stage immediately post-op, you should be able to get protein from your food. I also bet you will actually be able to find a protein shake you DO like - there are a TON to try!

Thanks Jill.
Maybe I'm worrying about stuff I don't need to.
Maybe I should just worry about getting approved first! :D

What you probably are thinking about is the post op diet where for about 10 days you can only do liquid and emphasis are placed on protein. During that phase your protein is mainly your focus as it is anyway but you really use protein supplements during that period. Trust me, I am a very finicky eater. I have found protein shakes that are great. I also use Soy milk as way to get protein. South Beach has yummy protein bars.

talk with your doc. people have different protein goals post-op - mine was very high [80-100 grams] because of my size and a few other issues. other people have goals as low as 30 grams per day - but most post-ops are told something around 50-60, depending on the doc AND depending on the type of surgery.

i'm a HUGE NEctar fan - kind of fruity flavors that mix nicely with yogurt. and that's PLAIN, lowfat/FF yogurt.

but it's also important to remember that the protein shake thing is TEMPORARY. the reason many of us needed to use them was because there was NO WAY AT ALL that we could meet the protein goals with just a couple of tablespoons of food at a time. and protein is ESSENTIAL for healing -

You can also add unflavored protein powder to liquid/soft foods such as juice, yogurt, soup, pudding, scrambled eggs, etc. I highly recommend Unjury for their protein powder. The unflavored is really that -- no flavor. My son *loves* the chocolate -- we both think it tastes like chocolate milk. And they make a good chicken soup.

Good luck! :)
