Suggestions for eating on a weird schedule?

Hey everyone! I was hoping to get some advice about on my eating schedule. I work at a Hospital, and I work 3 days a week (12 hour shifts). More often than not I'm on night shift which is 6 pm - 6 am. I can eat at work, but didn't want to because I know this is the time frame I really shouldn't be eating.

Does this still apply to me? Usually the digestive system is slowing down at this time because you are sleeping, but I'm not sleeping. Should I treat the 12 hours I am awake at work as if it were my normal day?

Like today, I slept until about 11. I just ate "breakfast" at 12:30. I probably won't have lunch as I am going to try to get a couple more hours of sleep before work. I plan to eat salmon and broccoli for dinner around 5. I was planning to take a yogurt and some other light snack to have around 7. I know this isn't necessarily good because I am skipping a meal and overall not eating THAT much during the day, but what would you suggest?

Eat larger meals? Eat later? Force myself to wake up to eat?

Well, definitely don't force yourself to wake up just to eat. I would suggest just treating your work day as normal and eat breakfast / lunch at work or lunch / dinner at work. For a 12 hour day, you should probably eat twice during that. I would have my first meal a couple hours before work, then another around 10 pm, then another meal at around 3 am. As you know, letting your blood sugar drop too much can set you up for a binge! So don't wait 12 hours and risk going home and giving yourself a reason to pig out. However, if you do find it easy to go 12 hours without eating and without binging after you get home, you could very well do that as well.

I'd treat it as if it were my normal day. I lost 40 of my lbs while working graveyard (9pm-5am) at a casino and I ate all throughout the night and didn't have any problems with weight loss. I was most active from mid-evenings to early mornings - those technically were my "days" - so it made more sense for me to eat then. Hope that helps!

I think you've gotten some good suggestions I just wanted to make sure you understood the following:

It doesn't matter when you eat (in the context of fat loss/gain.) What matters is calories. Eating 2 times a day or 12 times makes no difference.

Morale of the story? Focus on what and how much you're eating, not when you're eating it. Just eat in a way which is most convientient to you and your schedule.

Goodluck!
