Diet soda is really bad news. Yes the sweetners but the carbonation can literally rot your stomach. I am a nurse and one dr I work with in my hospital, who is a leading stomach specialist called it rat poison. I work at the Cleveland clinic. We are just finding out things today and I think in the future it might lead us to why cancer is on the rise and it will be a major culprit.

People get extremely defensive over diet pop. Wow.
Without getting bogged down in a "science' cat fight - to the OP's question: You really need to figure out if you still want it and if you can tolerate it. You may find that you've lost the taste for it. If you haven't - every thing in moderation works for many people.
I don't mind the Zevia drinks, although they do have a few calories and carbs. (They're sweetened with Stevia). I have one every once in a blue moon or as a mix if I'm going to drink hard liquor. You may also look into Soda stream machines. We have one, and I rarely use the mixes. I just carbonate the water when I want something bubbly and add some green tea or strawberries. I used to drink a HUGE amount of regular soda, and I've lost the taste for it. I stick to green tea and water.
This is anecdotal, but I really believe (and I was backed up by a few of his physicians) that my father's 4 liter a day diet pepsi habit contributed to his stroke and final health problems. That being said, that's an excessive amount of anything for anyone, and he had other issues, so it's hardly conclusive.
At the end of the day it's a chemical. And I go out of my way not to put chemicals in my body. (including lean cuisines and tv dinners). I feel better and lose better eating meat, vegetables and a little dark chocolate, but there are 100 people here that have had a diet soda a day or more and have lost and maintained.
Trust your body.

I didn't dig through all of the studies listed here but saw it while reading another article and remembered this thread.

Unfortunately I drink diet soda like water, I love the stuff but I know it has chemicals. It's like having my coffee daily, if I cut the diet soda out with the diet, I don't think I could make it.

If it's helping you to get to a healthy weight, maybe it's worth it to enjoy for now. I doubt I could have lost weight without all the additive-laden crutches like Mio water flavoring, Walden Farms dressings and sauces, etc. I made a deal with myself that I could enjoy them temporarily without worry. Now I am gradually tapering off those things. But if you you are finding it triggers cravings for junk food or stalling weight loss, it might be a good idea to abstain and watch what happens.

I couldn't seem to drop weight while having a daily coke zero habit. I cut out diet soda completely-went cold turkey-and dropped 18 lbs in a month. That was over a year and a half ago and to this day, I only drink sparkling water. Cravings for soda disappeared just a couple of weeks after eliminating it from my diet.

I will be honest I love diet coke. I have gone years without it and when I drank it again it was like "oh hello old friend" there is just nothing that tastes the same to me. I have heard all the hype and while I question many of the scientific sources I do believe that all of the "fake" foods we eat in the modern diet are the source off all the allergies, intolerances, and issues we see now. We also need to remember that people are living longer and we have better diagnostics so there is more opportunity to find out what is wrong and put a label on it where as 100 years ago people just got sick or died.
The bottom line is chemicals are not good for us. We don't eat the way our bodies are evolved to eat. Unless u can adopt a full organic paleo style diet then u are doing things that your body was not designed to do. If you can that's great. I know I couldn't. I love food too much. I need a diet I can live with. I am doing well on my carb cycle plan but I just started. Diet soda is a treat for me and I know it does not change the way I feel when I don't have it because I have eliminated it on 4 occasions in my life from 6 weeks to 2.5 years. It is just my favorite drink. Nothing quenches my thrust the same. I wish I could lose my taste for it but I can't.
So I have a bet going with my daughter that I must stop for 1 month starting tomorrow. Wish me luck. It's going to be hard.
In the end I agree with other posters to watch the sites you view as facts.
As for the OP if it makes u happy and you can keep up with moderation, I can't, then do what works for you. There are so many worse things you could do. As long as it isn't making you sick then go for it.

The consequences associated with diet soda and low calorie sweeteners are fewer and less severe than for the use of many household products we take for granted as being necessary (but are not), such as; room and carpet fresheners and deodorizers, liquid fabric softeners and dryer sheets, colognes and other fagrances, oven cleaners, disinfectants and other household cleansers, cosmetics, using plastic food and beverage containers (even those that are bpa free, and not just those used in the microwave or for storage of acidic foods, though those are the worst).
Eating food grilled over wood and/or charcoal (not to mention the smoke itself) is known to be more dangerous than artificial sweeteners.
Even wearing shoes with more than a 1" heel is associated with greater risks than artificial sweeteners.
Giving up or reducing use of artificial sweeteners isn't a bad idea, but in many cases it's like smoking, drinking and abusing other drugs heavily while operating heavy machinery and deciding to give up coffee. It can't hurt, but I would argue that it makes more sense to get rid of the most dangerous habits first.
We don't hear much about many of these other risks, but many of them we do, and simple ignore because it's inconvenient to do so. It's become pretty much common knowledge that the smoke and charring caused by smoking, grilling, and broiling meat (and perhaps even vegetables) are carcinogenic, but that knowledge doesn't seem to inhibit summer barbecues.
I have to admit that I'd rather give up diet soda than my summer barbecues, but I have no illusions that they're safer.
I have gotten rid of most household cleaners and fragrances though, and am currently have replaced most of my plastic food storage and beverage containerd with glass. I wear cologne and cosmetics extremely rarely, and wear sensible, comfortable shoes.

You are welcome Waterbunny. Hope you'll keep us posted!
A PS: I've posted this elsewhere, but it seems relevant here: I've been hanging onto Mio water flavoring. Some posters provided info that scientists think even artificial sweeteners can trigger sweet cravings and release of insulin (fat storage hormone & involved in hunger sensation). Apparently this can happen when anything sweet-tasting hits the tongue. So I decided it's time to start tapering these things off. *However they got me through the period of weight loss.

Regarding insulin release this is true in some people however the amount is not significant. This is a case of headlines over substance. There are reasons one might not choose to drink diet soda at all but insulin shouldn't be one of them in my opinion.

This is pretty much my experience. Now, what I also have to say for myself is that once I stopped drinking it and switched to only water and my morning coffee, I felt like I had greater control over my weight loss efforts, so that might contribute to my loss. And obviously that wouldn't be a universal reaction to dropping diet soda. Just looking at this thread the responses are all over the place, so I'd say be your own judge.
