Red face First Weigh In...Was It Too Much?

I did my first weigh in and lost 11.4 lbs my first week. I know that because I'm larger and I just started, the weight should come off more quickly and I was expecting 5-6 lbs...not double that. And don't get me wrong, I'm over the moon about it, I'm just a little concerned because that seems to be a lot at once and I'm trying to form habits I can keep with. This is what I've been doing so far:

* 1500-1700 calories a day (which is less than 1/2 of what I was eating)
* 1-2 mile walk around my neighborhood everyday
* 1/2 hr of stretching each day - I have a bad back and want to check with my doctor before doing anything too strenuous
* I cut out all caffeine aside from one cup of black coffee in the morning.
* 6-8 16 oz bottles of water everyday
* I didn't cut out any particular food group out - aside from refined sugar. I have just been trying to keep track of calories.
* If it has more than five ingredients in it I don't buy it.

I don't think I went over board and I honestly think these are things I could keep up with over a long period of time. Am I trying to do many things at once?

No, it's not too much. When you first start losing weight, a lot of the weight you lose will be water weight. But that's the first step and you are doing good, so congrats!

Here is a good article about water weight. Scroll down to water loss and water stores, that explains it for the most part.

When I started at 335, I probably got the first 40lbs off in like 4 weeks. And I was eating 1800 calories and maybe getting 20 minutes of cardio a day XD It just fell off. Oh how I wish that could happen again lol. So no its normal, you're fine.

Woot! Congrats on the great weigh-in & as stated by previous poster, that first weigh-in could be water weight to some extent but definetly it is partly fat as well to judge by your plan, which is really sensible & not overboard at all. You are doing great!

Awesome start! I lost about 10 pounds my first week! Lots of water, but I'll take it. Keep on keeping on!

Good job! Considering your stats I don't think that that amount is abnormal or anything to worry about. Unfortunately your body won't keep that pace up for long, so just enjoy it while you can!

Of course it all depends on our individual metabolism, but I'm almost 80 lbs. less than you and eat 1500-1700 calories per day and can lose 1.5-2 pounds per week. So I feel like with your body size you could definitely increase the calories and still lose a healthy amount of weight. I'd gauge it by this next week's weigh-in, because like everyone's saying it's most likely water weight. If not, I'd increase the calories some. Keep up the good work--you are doing awesome!

Thanks for the tips! I'm still a little fuzzy on how many calories I really should be eating which is something I will just have to experiment with I guess. I know it varies from person to person, hopefully my doctor will be able to give me some idea.

I lost 12 pounds in my first 14 days on Weight Watchers. Like you, I had basically decreased my food intake by half. Like others have said, it's mostly your body releasing water. Your weight loss will slow down eventually.

If you'd like some guidance on calories, try www.myfitnesspal.com It's free, it's good and it will give you goals based on your current weight and fitness level.

Thanks - she's my baby! Her name is Daisy and she is an 8 month old puggle that we rescued. I got her partially to help me be more active, but she is horrible to take on walks...she wants to smell everything! This is my first dog and it has been an adventure to put it mildly.

Awesome first weigh-in punkrocksong!! It's totally normal to lose that much the first weigh in but you'll never see it again!! Mine was 11 the first week and then 7 the second week and then it lowered and leveled off a bit. But the 11 sure is motivating, isn't it?! You are doing so great!!

I think I might have told you already but just in case I didn't! My screenname is for Elvis and he's my puggle!! And we do not walk together for fitness ever, that little beagle nose is not able to ignore any of the enticing smells out there!! His nickname is Smelvis as he smells EVERYTHING!!! He's as cute as a button but he'll never be a workout dog LOL!! Daisy is a cutie pie!!
