Why is the 220s the male ONE-derland?

A lot of you have not been asking me this, but you should have been!

I think the 220s is the male-equivalent of ONE-derland and not just because I am getting close to them either.

So why?

Well, fudging some rather useless statistics which rely on BS BMI I have come up with the following shakey theory:

The average male height in the US is 5'10". Assuming a medium body frame, he might be aiming for a goal weight of 151-163lbs based on BS BMI.

The average female height in the US is 5'4". Assuming a medium body frame, she might be aiming for a goal weight of 124-138lbs based on BS BMI.


The difference between the boys and the girls is 25-27lbs.

So the 220s are the male ONE-derland!

Note: BS stands for BS. BMI really is a load of BS!

My brother has always been big... But he always played a lot of sports including football through college... He's 6' tall and about 250lbs. and I know he would like to lose some weight now... but we don't really talk about it all that much... He'll occasionally ask for advice here and there, but he is pretty casual about the whole thing... and he basically thinks that I take the whole dieting and losing weight thing much too seriously... which I think he thinks is sort of a "girl" thing...

And I know for a fact he has never heard of the whole "Onederland" thing.... But the funny thing is he thinks that 220lbs is just about the right weight for a man who is 6' tall, because he thinks that BMI is BS too... (I won't go into what I think about BMI... I'll just say it is what is... and leave it at that...) So I could definitely see how for him getting down to 220 would be like hitting Onederland... I can definitely follow that logic...

My husband was about 220 when I started this (I weighed over 100lbs more than him and I'm 3 inches shorter *gasp*). He was a little chubby compared to what he was when we were younger (but who was I to judge?!). He's lost 27lbs since I started my plan just by not eating junk (since I don't buy much) and having less alcoholic drinks. He's down to 193 and looks downright skinny to me at 5ft9.

I do get mad though----if he never lost weight, I'd finally weigh less than him!!! I already warned him that he *better* not get less than 193. I should be there by Mother's Day I hope!

Its funny you posted this. When I started out at 405 pounds, I picked 220 as my goal weight. The reason why I picked it is because that is the lowest weight I have ever been as an adult. I've always been fat ... since I was about 8 years old. By the time I finished high school I was about 260. In my freshman year of college I went to Nutrisystem and lost 40 pounds. For a very brief time I was 220. I was wearing size 38 pants. Although I remember thinking at the time that I was still a little flabby, when I look back on it now, and see the one picture I have of myself at that weight, I think that weight was pretty darn good! (Mind you, this was my mindset at 405 pounds). As I get closer and closer to my goal, I might revise my goal. But I can't imagine it being any less than about 210. But for me, there is another variable. I will probably have so much excess skin when I'm done losing that I will probably be carrying a significant amount of extra weight that I won't be able to lose (the excess skin). I don't know how that will factor into the whole equation.

I agree that the BMI is a load of BS. There is no way that a simple calculation that is a function of height and weight is going to accurately state what EVERY person's proper weight should be. Ok, maybe my 220 goal is a little high. But even If I get down to 210 and am wearing size 36 pants, I think that will be fine for me -- even though the BMI will say that I am still overweight and borderline obese!

Started out at 405.5 on 7/31/12. Then lost 156 lbs to get down to 249.5 by 7/31/13. In the past year I have put back on over 40 pounds and reached a high of 291.5. But I have recommitted myself and quickly took off ten pounds by 7/31/14. I am now trying to take off the weight I put back on, and then lose the rest of the weight I was originally trying to lose. ‹---- Starting weight / Low weight / Current Weight / Goal Weight

I love your math! Seems pretty spot on. I'm sure it depends on the body type of the male (as it does with females).

I wonder what my husband would look like bigger. I've only known him small. He weighs 125 pounds and is around 5'7". I wonder what his BMI is....Hm...Apparently the low side of optimal.

Where DO guys typically want to be? High optimal? Middle optimal? You would think many would be focused more on body fat percentages. :: shrugs ::

I'm starting to think BMI is a load of BS too. At 150lbs now, I look healthy, and like I said on my "whoosh" post, I'm a little bonier in certain areas than I would like to be and I honestly think that if I got any lower than 140 then I wouldn't look healthy anymore. The BMI chart might say I'm overweight and that my health is at risk for being borderline overweight, but all my numbers are good, and if I'm in smalls and mediums and end up in 6s, I don't see why I need to lose anymore weight. I want healthy, not tiny.

It's all relative.

My oldest son is one big ole walking muscle! 5'11" 185, about 24% body fat. However current charts and stuff, say he is fat!His twin brother is built a bit leaner, but still a power house, you just would not know it to look at him.

I'm a blob from the waist down, no matter how many squats and lunges I do, but I look like a college D line guy from the waist up.

We have the bodies the good Lord gave us. The best thing we can do is be the healthiest we can be.

The charts that the insurance companies, and Dr.s and diet sights have, I think we should take all that paper and start a fire and bbq some healthy kabbobs!

Oh. I totally think the BMI is a load of BS. I also don't think men and women should be measured on the exact same scale.

Honestly I think 220 is ideal for my hubby at 6'1".
At 200 he looks "skinny" and I'm not attracted to skinny men
