Candy by the check out--and not at a grocery store, either!

  • Macy's, Old Navy, Sports Authority, and now Michael's--you're killing me!!
  • Oh I know! At my job, they have flippin' GODIVA chocolate at the register! I discovered we now have peppermint bark, which is one of my absolute favorites. Fortunately, Godiva chocolate is expensive so that keeps me from buying it and nomming it.
  • Soooo mean.
  • It's Everywhere!!!

    Er, sorry for yelling.
  • I LOATHE it, not because of myself but my kid never let me leave a store in peace! Drove me insane.
  • Michaels where we are has had it for a while...those Lindt truffles. Dangerous!
  • Oh I hate that they put it there! I make it through the store without it and then they try to trap me with it at the very end. Usually I don't give in but sometimes I cave. It is even at home depot (lumber and home improvement store) here. We are surrounded, sigh.
  • It is everywhere isn't it - I have gotten good at not noticing though!
  • It is everywhere and all I think is "God how old is that?" because I rarely see people buying it.
  • Yes!!! Home Depot too!!
  • I've noticed this in strange places too, I was surprised when I saw it at JoAnnes a couple of years ago along with a cooler of pop, but now it seems commonplace.
I think my mom "ruined" me as a child because she would rarely buy me anything from by the checkout, it was just something we didn't do, and now I don't think I even notice the candy. The only time I even look is if I need some gum, a candy bar never enters my thoughts. I will have to thank mom next time I see her.
Remember when someone posted a while back instead of telling yourself you "can't" buy the candy, just tell yourself you "don't" buy candy at checkouts.
  • Ah, yes . . . I was thinking of Home Depot as I browsed back into this thread. Why, why, why? This makes me think of an article I read ages ago that discussed how there aren't any old-school gas stations anymore; to maximize profits they've all turned into mini convenience stores chocked-full of highly-processed snacks. It seems that mindset is spreading everywhere now. My Michael's has a whole display of candy bars on top of the Lindt truffles; they've got Reese's, 3 Musketeers, and everything. There's candy at Hobby Lobby, at all the dollar stores (where they're only 50 cents), office supply stores (really, they're considered office supplies now?), Bed Bath & Beyond, department stores at the mall . . . no wonder it's a losing battle for some.

That's pretty much what I've had to do, although it took a lot of practice for it to become second nature. I used to feel I was really missing out if I couldn't have a candy bar, and now not even the Halloween candy aisle phases me.
  • Local feed store in a town of 2,800 people...candy, cokes and an ICE CREAM FREEZER.

My parents either! Ever. I remember grandparents doing it when they'd visit, but my parents..no. But they didn't even allow us to have soda unless it was at a restaurant and probably it was a 50/50 shot LOL. I sometimes think the whole super clean eating I did is why I went way overboard...but that's another discussion.

I also agree with the "I don't" versus I "can't" Originally when I started doing this I felt like a snob or something, but you know generally the people that challenge me as far as saying "you DON'T what's that suppose to mean?" are ones that want me to slip up. When I would say "I can't" with these people, it's almost as if their goal in life that moment was to get me to go off plan. So I figured while I might feel "rude" or something, it gets my point across.
  • Office supply stores and BB&B--yes!!
TJ Maxx was a veritable gauntlet today! And the line moved sooo slow!
