Whats with the Atkins ads from h*ll? They won't close

I understand that the site needs income to keep running, and I have no problem with advertising revenue achieving that, but the Atkins ad is making it almost impossible to actually USE the site. It pops up, obscuring the screen, and will NOT close. Consequently, I can't read posts, and if I'm writing a post or new thread, I can't see what I'm trying to type, or access anything behind the blasted ad. Can we at least modify the thing so it will close when you click the little X?

Is this a problem for others, or I am alone in my aggravation?

there is a little "x" in the top right hand corner, it closes for me. My popup stopper doesnt stop this one unfortunately.

I haven't had any trouble closing the little buggers, either.

Annoying as these ads are (the pop-up blocker just won't work on these little monsters here), I had no problem closing them either.

fropvd 04-07-2003 03:56 PM

Odd. I can click and click and they simply refuse to close for me. I don't mind seeing them at all, I just object to not being able to close the suckers. What browsers are you all using?

RavenToy 04-07-2003 04:07 PM

IE 6.0 on this machine... I think IE 5.x at home.

fropvd 04-08-2003 03:01 PM

Hmmm...it may have been some sort of freeze. I rebooted and now it will close when I click on it. Its odd though, because the rest of the page responded as usual.

Oh well...the important thing is that the problem appears to have been resolved. Thanks for the input Raven Toy, Robin, and loranden!

Cool Beans! Restart is probably one of my best friends. ;)

I too had trouble with those pesky pop up adds, and my husband installed Norton Internet Security 2003 (costs about $30) and it has stopped the problem. Regular Norton scans for viruses etc., but the internet security does that and also blocks those annoying ads. I haven't had a single one since (knock on wood) and it sure is a lot more fun surfing!:)

I have a choice of IE 6.0 or NetScape 6 on my computer.

Reading this thread reminded me of something ELSE I read in a Dilbert newsletter a couple years back that I still have in my file...

from "Dogbert Answers My Mail"...
Quote:

Dear Mr. Adams,

The pop-up ads on your dilbert.com Web site are annoying! Please make them go away.

Tommy

Dear Commy,

People have learned to ignore Web ads that don't move, so lately
advertisers are only willing to pay for pop-up ads. Someday, after
you learn to ignore pop-up ads too, then the advertisers will have
to drive to your house and tattoo ads directly on your body. You'll
be nostalgic for the good old days of pop-up ads. Enjoy them while you can.

Sincerely,

Dogbert

I have a problem with these ads also... they show up and keep blinking and I cant close it either... what I have figured out to do is to hit the back button and go to the previous screen then go back and it is normally gone... it is a pain but i will survive....

RavenToy 04-08-2003 08:21 PM

*lmao* Mrs. Jim. That was classic.

Since this thread was started about a pop up add from Adkins, I was just wondering if anyone has heard how Dr. Atkins is doing after his fall?

fropvd 04-10-2003 11:48 AM

I had just heard that he was seriously injured, but no details. I hope he'll be alright though.
