Can you gain weight while sick?

So, these last few days I have been completely exhausted, my throat is just so sore, my head is pounding, and my nose is all stuffy. Im thinking its just a cold, which is fine! But these last few days i've been seeing a couple pound gain on the scale. I know weight fluctuates, and im not really worried about it because i know i have been 100 percent on plan, but Im just curious as to what you guys think? do you think its because i'm getting sick? I am taking a break from my exercise (besides maybe a light walk around the neighborhood) until i start feeling better.

I guess im just really wondering if this has happened to any of you when you get sick?

When you are sick, your body is doing all sorts of wonky things. You may have water retention and inflammation from your body trying to fight off the germies, and that could be showing on the scale. You could also be, um, backed up a bit from medications and such and therefore have extra food in your colon.

If you aren't working out and are eating comfort foods to make you feel better that could be a small contributor as well, although I doubt the gain you are seeing is any "real" gain... Take a good look at your eating, and if you honestly aren't consuming a bunch of extra calories I wouldn't stress over it.

I had a sinus infection in January and gained water weight until it cleared. It was annoying and discouraging but I stayed on plan and it whooshed off a week later. I had knee surgery 3 weeks ago and I'm still retaining a pound from that water weight increase. If you're diligent about your calorie intake your decrease in exercise shouldn't be a big deal. Hope you feel better soon!

Don't worry about gaining weight: worry only about fat. If you eat more calories then you take in, then you will gain fat. Otherwise, don't worry about what the scale says; trust that your body's fluctuations are natural and fat loss will show eventually.

Sickness quickly reduces our body weight. Only rest is suggested during sickness to cover up the defciency. I did't see any situartion in which one can gain weight during sickness. But during any injury like bone fracture one can gain weight because his all body parts work popperly and he has to lay dow for days.
