I'm also a glass-half-full type.. I think they were trying to encourage you! Seeing that you're in the high 300's and have quite a ways to go to even get to the size 16 range, maybe they were trying to tell you that you haven't got quite so much to lose, kwim? Sort of breaking up your journey into manageable chunks...

Keep up your motivation though and you'll do great. Doesn't matter what anyone says.. like you said, you'll decide for yourself when the time comes where you want to stop. THe important thing now is to just keep on going.

I think it's pretty obvious that they picked a size for you that matches what they are. Your new answer should simply be, "I plan to get to a healthy weight. Whatever size that might be." Who can argue with that?

Great job so far. Vent all you want. Keep up the great work.

Life style change started on Jan 13, 2011. I was going to lose 100 pounds by Christmas.
I lost 90 pounds by Oct 1, 2011 and am holding there for now. We'll see what happens.
