Chinese Buffet

  • Hi all.. Unfortunately I need to attend a company luncheon which is being held at a Chinese Buffet Restaurant, of all places. Question is, aside from the obvious will power I need, what do you think are "safe" foods to eat? If anyone can give me some suggestions I'd really appreciate it!!
  • Eat before you go! I always do that Then I choose healthy things like steamed veggies, sushi, grilled chicken and then load up on fresh fruit for dessert Your not nearly as hungry if you eat something before so you will not be tempted
  • Make a rule - one plate. No seconds.

Look for anything that looks steamed. Avoid anything that looks fried or is labeled General Tsao (that stuff is a calorie bomb). Avoid any "honey sauce" or any sauce you think looks sticky/sweet. Load up on veggies, see if they have any hot/sour soup (generally low cal and filling), remember that a serving of rice has nearly 200 calories so take a SMALL portion of rice if you want some.

Get hot tea and don't be afraid of the fortune cookie, they're pretty low cal. And don't forget - this is only one meal. Just get back in your healthy groove for your next meal.
  • good idea looking for low cal soup, then you can get a big salad and try to find unbreaded, not fried protein... I think people expect you to go up and down and get a few plates of food so really your best bet is to keep loading up on salads and eat slowly so you don't finish before everyone else. Also don't let people tempt you into trying something if they tell you it's "really good, just try it".
  • go for the broccoli beef!
  • Thank you all for your suggestions. It was a success, had less of a cup of rice, grilled chicken, and some fruit for dessert. I did sneak in 1 piece of honey chicken, just a little one...I had to!! Thanks again!
