It would be very very hard for someone your weight to lose 10 pounds a month in an ongoing manner. However, if you go from a relatively normal American diet to a healthy lower carb (and calorie) diet, you *might* lose 10 lbs in the *first* month -- but that would include a lot of water weight in addition to some real weight loss.
You might also lose a few "honeymoon" pounds of "weight" simply by cutting back on how much you are eating -- because you will be carrying around less undigested food (Some folks can have 20 lbs to start in there!).
Both these effects have nothing to do with true weight loss (which we wish would all come from fat in selected areas, but in actuality comes from all fat areas as well as some muscle).
Many folks drop weight rapidly when they first start a healthy diet, especially if it's lower in carbs. It can be inspirational but it can also lead to expectations that are too high for ongoing weight loss. And those pounds are quick to come back if you go off plan. But if you are just hoping to fit in your pants before school starts so that you don't need to buy a new wardrobe, it may suffice. Just keep up the good work and you will lose weight for real.
