I would like to say that this is not necessarily untrue. Being just a tad taller than your friend, I specifically looked for a treadmill with a running area of 55" in length (I believe they typically range from 52" to 55"). Taller than average runners need 60". Of course, it depends whether a person just walks or runs. It is not unusual for me to hit the housing at the front when my stride gets too long.
Also, it is not just the height alone. Apparently, I have longer legs than most of women of the same height (believe, finding jeans that long enough [unless I look in the $150 and higher range] is ****).

She walks, I find it hard to believe that peoplein the 5 ft 8 range would need a $3,000 or so dollar professional grade treadmill to be able to workout. We have another friend who is 6 ft and she uses one she bought onsale for like $800 with no problem. I also feel like it was an excuse because once she got it, it still went unused because she needed padding for it, then she had to paint her diningroom where she was going to put it because she couldn't work out with the wallpaper that was in there. LOL. Trust me, for a long time I tried to believe she wasn't just full of crap... but then I ralized that was futile.
