Is it good or bad that my housekeeper asked if I was inferma?

  • Because I've gotten so delgada . I think it's good . She doesn't speak much English and I don't speak much Spanish, and I think she was worried that she'd say I looked great and find out I had cancer or something . I've lost lbs since she started working for me.
  • Hi,

She is asking if you are sick, inferma means sick or ill. My roommate is Mexican so I can speak it pretty well, but am by no means fluent. You can tell her you are trying to lose weight so you can be healthy . . . Here is how to say it:

No estoy tratando de perder peso, así que puede ser saludable
    (No s-toy tra-tando day pear-der pay-so, a-see k pway-thay ser sa-lu-dable)

OK I tried phonetic or you could just show her this. Also in Mexican culture to be a little bit overweight is actually a sign of wealth, e.g. if you have money you can eat well and are not delgado (thin).

Also Google has a translator that I use a LOT, it may help you
  • Oh, I knew what she meant . I just thought it was funny.
  • I think it is sweet that she asked.

I work in food service and a lot of my employees are Spanish speakers. One of the guys I used to work with was called 'gordo'. I had no idea for years that they were essentially calling him 'fat boy'.
  • Yeah, I live in Mexico (so I'm learning Spanish, but I'm not great at it!), and you here moms calling their little ones gordita and gordito all the time, like we would say "sweetie" or something.
  • I'm so jealous you have a housekeeper!!!!
(Although I do have a landscaper, but man, walking into a clean house that I didn't have to clean would be fabulous!)
  • It is so cheap to have a housekeeper here. I'd actually sort of feel bad if I didn't hire some one to do it - jobs are scarce here and poverty is high. We're not rich (that's actually why we're living in Mexico, the cost of living is so much lower here than in San Diego), but if I can afford to provide a job for someone, I'm willing to do it. It only costs about $25/day and she comes once a week.
  • I'm Mexican and my mother in law asks me that same question all the time. Estas enferma? How funny. I think it's a culture thing or just a habit.
  • I think your housekeeper is quite sweet and that she cares.
