I have a hamstring injury. I wasn't sure where to put this on the forum, but I'm not exactly sure how to care for this injury. I would not call it severe, I can walk but if I attempt running I feel an awful twinge of pain! What do I do? I don't want to be down with this, I just got started!
Manda, no I don't think it is quite that bad...yet. I think I just pulled/tore it. Crazy enough, my daughter brought home a biology quiz study sheet today and it had the area where I hurt listed...biceps femoris. Several days ago, it began to hurt try to go down in a sitting position in both hamstrings. Today, there is definite jarring pain on the right hamstring only.
It's Jillian and those d@#m squats! I can't do her workouts anymore right now, I've realized they are no good for my knees or anything else, I ache for days afterwards. The series of jumping jacks, yes, jumping jacks, really messed up not just my knees, but my ankles too.
REST is the number one thing I can say to do at least. Though if it's that painful you may want to see a doctor- specially if tomorrow it still is very painful.
If you actually tore it, that's something a doc is going to need to look at. You might try lying down on your front, and trying to bend your leg up against some kind of resistance (maybe have your daughter push against it). If it hurts the hamstring to do that, you really want to get a doc evaluation, as you might have an actual tear instead of a pull.
For a more minor situation, you want to stick with RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) to keep swelling in the muscle down, and if it isn't better in a few days, really, a doc should be involved.
Thank you both, I am icing it now and will try the tear test! My doctor is seriously going to wonder what the heck I am doing, this will be my 3rd muscle tear since May! So yeah, can't do Jillian anymore
Thanks Amandie!! I did what Manda suggested and it actually felt good to have someone put resistance on it while I raised it, so I hope this is a good sign. It was like a good stretch almost. The muscle itself just feels like it is in a consistent, contracted state. Who knows what I did; I think I just try to go all in, but that is what Jillian keeps saying to do! lol
I had a slight injury from squats this week too. My knee though... my sister is a physical therapist and said this:
1. take ibuprofin to alleviate inflammation.
2. ICE it as much as possible.
I actually am still taking the ibuprofen. I iced it for about 36 hours and then I changed to heat. I find the heat soothes my muscles when they are sore. I took one whole day off of exercise and went light on the second day. No squats.
Although it feels tender- it doesn't hurt. I am going to skip squats until next Tuesday but I will spin tomorrow as usual.
I hope it gets better quickly for you. I know I was TERRORIZED with the thought of not being abl to workout.
