Not going off plan when unexpected stress hits

I just need to post SOMEWHERE so I can tell someone...

Yesterday we got back news about a family member that has been sick and is now dieing. (On hospice)
It was an out of the blue call, and we changed our plans and went to go see him.
After a few hours and other family stress we decided to just go out to grab dinner since it was super late, we were all hungry and I didn't feel like cooking.

I almost ordered what ever I wanted, including ice cream, thinking I'm stressed and this is unusual circumctances.
But I told myself that stress is not an excuse to start eating poorly. I craved a ciggarette too, but I knew I wouldnt give in to that ,so why would I give into eating poorly.

It was a new feeling to deal with unexpected stress and not use it as a reason to eat crap.

Makes it a little harder to deal with the issue at hand though.

I'm very sorry to hear about your family member's poor health :( *hug*

It's hard not to resort to comfort eating when stress hits. The logic you used is spot-on though, especially with the analogy to cigarette smoking. Eating well will help you live a long and healthy life. While our loved ones die, we still have to live.

That's a great NSV, in a terrible time. My condolences to your family, but congratulations to you. That's the kind of attitude that can help keep the weight off, too.

I've got to congratulate you for not eating so much in stress! Or smoking for that matter. I wish I had the fortitude not to eat my emotions when the chips are down, so; with all that is happening to you I at least want to pat you on the back for what I see as an amazing achievement in my eyes.

Wow GlamourGirl you're amazing. It's hard to finally seperate stress from eating. I know I'm still working on it. To be able to accomplish that when someone you know is dying shows willpower at it's best. You are an inspiration to me!

when you can remember to not eat crap during stressful times is when you know this is becoming a lifestyle change and you are truly committed to your plan. I usually tell myself eating junk will only make things worse later and that losing weight and eating right will help lessen the stress later.
