No reason to be afraid. You don't have to say anything if you don't want to. In the meetings I attended, three things were read at the start of each meeting 1) the 12 steps 2) the 12 traditions and 3) the rules for that particular meeting. Sometimes the rules may ask that you don't mention specific foods.

If possible before you go find out the type of meeting it is because they range from very structured to very flowing.

But if you decide you want to speak it's very easy. Remember no matter what the compulsion/addiction, everyone is there because they are dealing or have dealt with it.

Hello my name is Breanna and I'm a ___________(compulsive eater, compulsive overeater, bulimic, anorexic, purger, binger - whatever fits).

Hi Breanna
Welcome Breanna

See nothing to be afraid of.

There is an OA section here that will give you some more insight.

I have found OA to be very informative and very comfortable to be a part of. I just said my name the first meeting, and nobody blinked an eye. It took me a few weeks to admit to myself, and them, that I was a compulsive overeater.
Good luck!

I just picked up my 30 day chip at an OA meeting last night. I find that being in a group of people that are trying to recover from the same issues with using food as a drug to be extremely comforting and helpful. I am not alone! Being in a OA meeting reminds me or that. WE can do together what I could never do by myself.
