Talking I can't believe this happened!

Hi all!

Just thought I'd post this here about what happened this morning!

SO, I got up early to get to a 7:30am Hot Yoga Class. I have to leave at 6:20am because I take my ebike downtown, which is 10 miles from my home. I jump on my ebike, and am travelling along just fine, when the ebike DIES! YUP, no power at all! Now, I have a full battery, so that isn't the problem. All I can think of is that a wire has jarred loose. So, I am 4 miles away from downtown with no power! And the removable ebike pedals are at home!!!

A kind motorcyclist stops and lends me his cell phone, and I call DH, who is asleep and doesn't pick up (it is, after all, 6:40 am on a Saturday morning)! The motorcyclist leaves. The only dealer/service provider for my ebike is downtown. SO, what to do?

Well, not much choice there! I PUSH my 160lb ebike ALL THE WAY downtown. 4 miles!!! In my crocs!!! Uphill alot of the way!!! It took me 1 hour and 10 minutes!!! And you know, it really wasn't an issue. I didn't think twice about doing this. And while I was pushing away, it really wasn't HARD, as in a HUGE effort. It just WAS, if that makes sense.

Anyways, I missed my class (but will go to the 3:30 pm class). My ebike is in the shop. But the AMAZING thing about this is that without having a solid exercise base behind me and without having lost a bunch of weight through watching my diet, there is NO WAY I could have done this. NO. WAY. As an out of shape 244lber, pushing my ebike just wouldn't have been an option. But as a fitter, 175lber, I just didn't think twice about what had to be done.

SO, the reason that I am posting this is because of a different thread linked to an article that states that exercise doesn't assist in weight loss. And while that may be true, exercise is VITAL to one's everyday functioning.

So get OUT there, just for a little bit, every day. You never know when your body may be called upon to do something out of the ordinary!!! And when that DOES happen, you will NEVER regret your decision to get fit and healthy.

Thanks for listening!

Kira

great story! in crocs yet.

I live in NYC and it's difficult to keep a car here (I don't have one). That means I walk and take public transport for everything. The subway has very few elevators/escalators, but PLENTY of stairs. (There are buses, but I don't really use them, slow, stop every block.)

At my heaviest years ago, it was such a struggle to get around, I'd have pains in my legs. Yikes. I'd actually think about distances (blocks), number of stairs I'd have to climb, and dread it. What a way to live.

I'll still have a good amount of weight to lose, but all the work in the gym I've done has helped incredibly. I don't even think about how much I might have walk, or stairs or anything like that. actually, I categorize that as doing it for myself for the ordinary! the extraordinary is all bonus!

awesome!! I love it when stuff like this happens and we "just do it!" Kira, congrats on all your efforts and being able to just push that ebike when you had no other choice but to do it!

You are spot on - eating right and exercising regularly certainly helps when the going gets rough ...

OMG--good for you!
DragonWoman--I live in NYC too, and my local subway stop has an escalator at the far end, and several flights of stairs at the near end. Always a toss-up, but I TRY to be good!

You are absolutely correct! for simply walking in crocs for that many miles. I wonder what was going through your mind. If it were me, I'd probably would have welcomed the walk, pushing the bike and all, simply knowing I would have been burning a boat load of calories. At any rate, good job and thanks for sharing. Exercise is definitely an important part of being healthy.

too funny, if ever you want to get some real exercise, try changing lines at the Pacific/Atlantic stop in Brooklyn (but they have elevators there too, ha), those stairs seem endless sometimes. -- Margie

Hi all!
Back from Yoga and the shop: apparently there is a power unit that blew that connects the throttle and the motor. So my poor bike is off road until then!
Ms Landons! An ebike is an electrically power-assisted bicycle. These come in different configurations, but mine looks alot like a little moped. The difference is that ebikes are regulated to 20 mph (32 kph) and must be capable of being powered by pedal. The scooter-style ebike is as a result classified as a "bike" so I don't need a license, insurance, registration, and I can park where the bikes park (ie for free)! Here's a picture of mine.
And what was going through my mind??? If you could have heard my mind speak, it would have been something like this:
CRAP oh well lets just get to the Tim Hortons and I need change for the phone cause I forgot my cell phone I'm so STUPID YIKES downhill! Hit the brakes!!! OK back in control....lallalalalalalala....here's the Tims, here's my change Oh CRAP a monster hill better take off my coat.....huff puff huff puff...only 3 more miles to go hey there's the univeristy I wonder if the lake is rough today...(and so on for the whole time...)
Hahaha!
