It's not that I've forgotten to eat necessarily, but because of years of screwing around with my system - over eating and under eating - my hunger triggers are messed up.
So I can eat a normal sized lunch and breeze through the next 6 hours w/out thinking about it - especially if I'm involved in a good book, a work project, whatever. Then suddenly it's 6:30 and I've moved beyond hunger into absolutely ravenous and I could easily eat plates and plates of food. And sometimes would.
So there are days that I do actually set the reminder on my computer so that I'll have my afternoon snack. It means that at dinner time I'm not so hungry that I'll suck down 1000 calories w/out thinking.
