This probably goes without saying, but the seats in business and first class are much larger and more accommodating. The seats in coach can sometimes be downright inhumane! Sometimes I even wonder how skinny folks can cope. I spoke to a few coworkers about this, one of whom suggested Lufthansa as far as international carriers with reasonably sized coach cabins. She somehow scored a $253 flight from D.C. to Dublin through their current winter sale, which is simply unreal.

On a lighter note, are you planning on flying anywhere fun, marree38? I'm flying to L.A. on Friday for a little family vacation - I can't wait to abandon this horrendous D.C. weather.

I find it definitely depends on the size of the plane. I flew on WestJet a couple of years ago to New York when I was about 270 pounds. They have bigger Boeing 737s and the seats were quite comfortable and I didn't need a seat belt extender (I'm biggest around the middle so the seat wasn't narrow). Last year I flew to New York on a smaller Comair plane, and that was really uncomfortable, I had to get an extender from a grumpy flight attendant). I was about the same weight as the year before. Another problem I have (had) was getting that folding tray down flat!
