Gaining weight in the GYM

  • HI !

My goal is to lose weight (Not body building)
I thought about it.... In the gym I'm only gaining more wight (I guess that part of it go to the muscles)...
So it's going against my interest....

Do you think I better focus on my diet plan and stop the gym ?
  • No don't ever stop going to the gym.

If your goal is to lose weight - chop off a leg. You could lose about 20lbs or more right there

But if your goal is to lose fat, whilst keeping your lean body mass (muscle, bone, water etc) then lift heavy weights, do interval cardio, eat 4-6 times a day and calorie cycle.

Your weight may have increased due to a number of things (I'm just guessing here since you haven't given us much to go on!). My guess is you're retaining water in your muscles as they are trying to recover. What happens when you lift weights is that you cause micro-tears in the muscles, which then need healing. This healing process is what causes muscle growth and can only occur while the muscle is resting. So when a muscle heals glycogen (energy) and water and all sorts of nutrients go to that muscle to help repair it.

Try taking measurements of your significant parts, chest, waist, hips, thighs, arms - and comparing them.

If you are new to the gym and weightlifting/cardio then you might gain a few pounds with water retention trying to heal the muscles OR you might be hungry from the increased exercise and be eating more than you realise. Are you tracking your calories? Do you know exactly what you're eating? Do you weigh and measure portions so that you know for sure you aren't eating too much?

I think in order to lose weight and keep it off forever and ever you must focus on BOTH. They go hand in hand. You really can't do one without the other for longterm success.
  • What are you eating as well? You should start tracking what you are eating in fitday.com.Exercising is never the problem when it comes to being healthy, unless of course you aren't doing any.If you aren't losing weight your first thought should be how can I improve my eating.
  • My understanding is cardio burns fat and weights will build muscle for burning more calories when resting so all around the gym is good place. Muscle weighs more than fat so you may gain weight, but you'll lose inches so it kind of balances out.

  • I'm trying to figure out what look you're after if you don't want muscle or fat. I guess that really thin boney look? I find muscles on a frame so much more attractive, but maybe that's just me. Each pound of muscle burns 50 calories at rest, while fat burns nothing when you're just sitting around. So the more muscle you have the easier it will be to maintain your fat loss, and frankly, you will look and feel a lot better for it. Obviously the goal is to look and feel and be healthy, not to get to the lowest number on the scale.

It does get discouraging not to see the numbers move down. I'm having the same problem right now as I ate decently and worked out pretty hard the last week and have lost nothing. Oh well, the numbers WILL move eventually.

    Keep up the working out!
  • Yup, we need more information. I did peek into your blog which says you at 167 lbs and would like to be 150 ... so we'd like to know how tall you are and why you've chosen 150.
You could be one of the slimmest buffest fellows around at 165 with slender healthy muscles.

  • muscle is better than fat

  • from reading your blog, you don't have very much to lose. You might be better off tracking measurements (gains for increased muscle in legs and arms, loss in the waist) instead of the scale. Grab a tape measure, some protein and keep going to the gym!
  • Thank u - you helped alot
It is getting better all the time.....
Now my weight is pretty blanaced.... I hope that soon it will go down the hill......
After all , that's why im going to the gym anyway...

    Thanks
    Mattt
  • 150 is very tiny for most guys! 165 with muscles is a very nice weight, most fit guys I've known have been 165-200 pounds with a height of 5'8"-6'2". The gym is a good place to be, you WANT to build muscles because they'll help you lose body fat in the long run!

  • Usually you gain weight before you start losing right when you start working out. Your body is just adapting to your new lifestyle. Give it some time and let your muscles and the rest of your body recover by taking a couple days rest in between workouts. You'll regret it if you stop going to the gym. If you stop, yes you'll lose MASS, but that mass will be muscle....and I'm sure you'd rather have muscles than look like a bean pole.
  • Maybe my problem is...
That I weigh myself anytime I go to the gym... it's 2-3 times a week usually...
Maybe I should start do it only once a week.....
  • Of course that is your problem
    Hi Matt !

Try n weigh yourself firest thing in the morning !!!
    Before eating , before drinking....
    !!!
It's important not to weigh everyday... Trust me on that one...
