Default scale- friend or foe?

Im wondering how often i should weigh myself. I have been doing pretty good, but dont seem to be loosing at all. Should i weigh myself more often to see if i am really loosing weight? Thank you all very much.

I think in the beginning it's best to weigh yourself once every two weeks. That way you don't get discouraged by a little weight loss the first week. I feel in the past I'd weigh myself after the first week, but it got me so discouraged I was back to my old eating habits. Once every two weeks seems to be working so far for me. I may gradually work up to once a week. But no more than that. Daily weigh-ins aren't a good thing, because our weight fluctuates so much, it'll only discourage you even more.

While losing weight, every week seems to work for me. While maintaining weight, every day works best. Every two weeks is OK, but I think that each week is better as you can tweak your program sooner if things aren't working for you.

Well, first: the scale's a FOE!

Second: I weigh myself once a week because that way I can keep track of my weight (even though it hasn't changed in WEEKS - ARGH! but that's a side rant) and tweak accordingly just like freiamaya said.

I weigh myself everyday, in the morning, before I eat. But only record it once a week.

If you are doing well the weight will indeed come off, sometimes it takes a body time to get used to a new lifestyle. It'll come, hang in there.

The Scale is our friieeennddd. We loooove The Scale!!!! We must be nice to The Scale. We must bow down before The Scale and leave It little presents, if we, the humble petitioners, want The Numbers to Change. The Scale is Good; The Scale is All.

I weighed myself every week while losing. Now, with maintenance I have tried twice a week and went back to just weighing weekly. My problem was that since I'm maintaining, if I showed a loss , I'd automatically think that entitled me to eat more for a few days. This didn't work, so this is why I only weigh once a week.

I agree with once a week. Any more than that and you risk becoming obsessed with the number on the scale. Many times if it's not going the way you would like it to go it can be that one thing that throws you off course completely. Many of us who are trying to lose weight can because frustrated with our progress if we weigh ourselves too much.

Good luck with what you decide - any more than once a week and the scale is one of those "friends" who you aren't really sure you want a relationship with anymore!

well, I'm the oddball, because I weighed myself twice a day while losing and I still weigh myself twice a day now (once in the morning and once a night). But the fluctuations don't bother me or impact my eating habits.

What really helped me in the beginning wasn't how often I weighed myself, it was setting a long-term goal. I started counting calories on Nov 7 05 and I told myself that I would give it until the end of Feb 06. Until then, I could weight myself as often or as little as I wanted, but I wasn't going to worry about what the scale said. I would just stick with my exercise and diet program regardless of whether or not I made any progress. If, by the end of Feb, I hadn't made any progress, I would try something different. I'm not sure what I would have tried because it never came to that. By the time Feb rolled around, I had made a lot of progress.

It took a little while for the pounds to start coming off and it took even longer for me to look visibly smaller. Having this goal really helped me get past the short-term lack of progress in the beginning.

I think the consensus seems to be: weigh as frequently as you like, as long as you understand that scales fluctuate for reasons other than FAT loss or gain.

The scale measures all of you: fat, bone, muscle and water, etc. So while we are interested in fat going down, water going up can mask fat loss, etc.

It can take a while to figure out what works for you.
