This week had been imformed on today segement on Oprah. She will have a woman who lost 500 Lbs, without any pills, surgery or diet plans and she looks great. She had online buddies that help her shed so much weight. A dear online pal of mine emailed her story this week and am just inspired of her amazing success story. Such an inspiring episode! My mom (who has been told by doctors that she won't be able to lose as much as she needs to without surgery) was even inspired. She'll be joining me in January!

My doctor told me the same thing. She told me it was practically unheard of for anyone to lose as much weight as I needed to without surgery. It didn't phase me one bit. I was just THAT determined to lose the weight.

At my last check up, this past September, she told me I needed to STOP losing weight. It was quite the reversal from the year before.

Thats interesting, at my highest weight (or anywhere in between), I never had any doctor suggest surgery even though I've been struggling with my weight since I was a child. I was also not sedentary.

I am curious though about the woman who lost 500 lbs (she is in the normal weight range now though right?), and says she just made better choices or what not. She never counted calories? That actually seems a bit odd. (I didn't actually see the show but I did read that story that was posted)

Mostly because I know a fairly inactive extremely obese person can lose some initial weight very easily by becoming somewhat active and making better choices with their food/cutting back on their portions. I can even believe that someone at her weight could let that go on for a weight loss of 200-300 of those lbs but I would think at some point, she'd need to be extra vigilant with both exercise and food.

The period where I didn't really worry about counting calories (but changed my diet dramatically) involved me going to the gym 5-6 days per week for an hour or more. I lost 70 lbs pretty effortlessly to get me into the upper 200s. Beyond that though, the last 80 lbs has been a struggle with making sure I exercise daily as well as carefully watching my food "or else".

No kidding Nelie. I lost my first 42 lbs by walking 60 minutes 3-5 days a week, PLUS eating more sensibly, cutting fast food down to once a week. But when I hit 240 I hit a brick wall and I upped the walking but, nope. Nothing more fell off.

I searched and searched and realized although I was eating better and exercising, my portions were still too much and that is when I found cal counting. 9 lbs came off that month!

I did have a relapse early this year and gained 17 back, went from 203-220 in 3 months. But my point is when I stayed consistent with both exercise and food I could steadily lose.

WHat I was also thinking when I read her article yesterday is she sure has that 3500 cals extra a week x 52 weeks x 10 years figured out well. SHe is definately a calorie counter in MY opinion!

I didn't see Oprah, but reading the article made me think that she traded one addiction (food) for another (internet). I'm sure that is not true--I'm sure she did make good choices and get exercise and it's not like she did it overnight--it took her 3 years.

My mom was only told that because she is sick often & can't exercise, she has arthritis in her knees and even going to the grocery store is a major accomplishment for her. We both eat fairly healthy, but she is pretty much home bound & sedentary. I am so glad that she finally has the motivation to at least try.

I too have arthritis in my knees but it is only a mild case.

My mom has been heavy all her life but she was never morbidly obese, like me. She used to complain about aches and pains and not being able to exercise.

Now she exercises for an hour every day, no longer use pain medication and has lots more energy. She started by simply doing it and her body responded favorably. It also helped her lose about 30 lbs. She just hops on her gazelle and watches tv.

It is amazing that once you start exercising, even if you don't feel like you can, it gives you more energy and will only help you.
