I heard the cookbook isn't that good. I heard the book is good but I'm not sure if I have any plans to read it. I think I like research based books rather than something like this. China Study and Eat to Live are what I'd recommend if someone wanted to know the reasons behind eating less/no animal products.
I read the book & found it to be entertaining in parts. Yes, the tone is crude & rude, peppered by liberal use of the F word.
I could not read the parts on animal slaughter. Can't do it and won't. VERY graphic and reminded me of a very brief visit to the PETA website a while ago. The book did seem as though I was being yelled at & scared into veganism. I did not see their rationale to be based on scientific or hard fact though.
Still, I got a few chuckles & it DID make me seriously consider exploring the vegetarian lifestyle by going to veg sites (a lot of them I found on 3FC).
I just bought the book last week. I was vegan in the past but when I moved back to my hometown I felt pressure from friends and family to go back to eating meat. Gave in and now eat meat but wanted to get back to being atleast mostly vegan. I like the book so far, I agree that it's sarcastic humor but that's what I like. I have read a lot of stuff on being vegan and this book only scratches the surface but I just needed something to get me motivated again, just a reminder of what I already knew.
I read reviews on the cookbook and it sounds like it might be a waste of money because most things are common sense like replacing lunch meat with the meatless substitute. I'm going to pass on the cookbook.
I agree that is just "scratches the surface" especially the animal cruelty stuff and if THAT can be considered too much in terms of how graphic it is, I can't imagine what seeing more in depth animal information would do to y'all!
I read it a few weeks ago. I found it entertaining and the tone to be pretty much what I expected, considering the title. But like others have mentioned, I like books that are backed by research, not 2 women ranting and raving.
So I just finished the book, and though I enjoyed some of it I do have some complaints. I disagree with a few points they made towards the end. First they said only eat when you are extremely hungry. If I wait until then to eat that's when I make bad food choices. I tend to agree with the idea of eating every 2-4 hours to keep your metabolism going. They also recommended doing a fast like a juice fast. I think that's extreme and unhealthy but I guess I could be wrong.
Overall I thought the book was good for me because it reminded me of the reason I was vegan before and gave me some motivation to start eating that way again, but I am not following their "plan". I'm going to keep counting calories, eating 5-6 times a day, but I will change the foods I eat to vegan and cut out artifical sweetners.
I havent read the book, although i would like too. I have to agree that The China Study and Eat to Live are very good research books about why we "shouldnt" eat meat.
Ok, first of all, I love love love love love love this book.
And at first perception, this book might seem offensive, but I didnt think it was. I thought it was hilarious and they even say on the cover that its a no-nonsense guide for girls who want to stop eating crap and start looking fabulous. Don't ever judge a book by its cover/title. Yes, they do use the "B-word." and other cuss words, but I thought it was funny.
And its not a weight-loss book. Its a change in lifestyle book. Its a Wake Up and Stop Eating Crap book. Read the last page. Its not a specific diet plan, but simply a lifestyle.
It seems to me that some people who read it really didn't get it. Its a stop eating crap book. It isn't about being "skinny"....you'd know that if you read the last page. Its just about getting healthy, and one way to do that is to stop eating animal products. I feel amazing since going vegan, and there are just so many freaking misconceptions about protein. You can get more than enough protein without eating meat. Our government lies to us and tells us that we need animal foods, like with the food pyramid (what nonsense is that!) when in fact, humans aren't meant to eat dairy (about 3 billion people are lactose-intolerant and they are mainly non-Caucasians, only European Caucasians retained the enzyme to digest cow's milk).
And for the record, the book has over a hundred references and citations.
"They also recommended doing a fast like a juice fast. I think that's extreme and unhealthy but I guess I could be wrong."
Switzie6....my doctor has recommended it to me. A lot of people recommend it, its just how and what you do. And you need to talk to your doctor about it and make sure you're being monitored.
I haven't read this book, but I have been told it's basically a book trying to convert you into veganism. But Dr Joel Fuhrman's Eat to Live and China study have convinced me for good eating mainly vegan is the way forward, to stay healthy and at a weight that you feel suits you best.
It's funny, I am a liberal person and I am not at all prude about swear words or whatever, but I thought the book was pretty insulting. According to these ladies, you're either a Skinny B---- or a fat cow or pig or whatever they say. Um, sure, I could lose some weight, but having 2 thin women try to convince me that I am so entirely defined by my size is the last thing I need (don't I get enough of that from the media?). It also makes it seem like women are competing with one another with their bodies, like it's fat people verses thin people, and you're trying to lose weight in order to be one of the people who make others feel bad rather than the other way around. Maybe some may feel or see this as true, to me it doesn't seem like a healthy or productive viewpoint.
That said, if someone was going to read the book as comedy with a few facts thrown in, it might be a great read, especially as a lot of diet books are pretty dry. Still, I'm not putting all this work in so I can be considered a "skinny b----", I'm going for healthy, strong, beautiful, etc. To each her own though.
