Default Vegan Substitute for sour cream????

Does anybody know what vegans use to substitute sour cream or mayonaise?

My personal favorite substitutes are Tofutti Sour Supreme (make sure you get the non-hydrogenated if you worry about trans-fats) and Vegenaise. Trader Joe's regular shelf-stable reduced fat mayo is also egg and dairy free.

"Vegenaise" made by Follow Your Heart is the BEST vegan mayonnaise I have ever had. They also make "Vegan Gourmet" which is the only vegan cheese worth eating that I have found.

Tofutti makes vegan sour ream called "Sour Supreme" and "Better than Cream Cheese" soy cream cheese. They are ALL good!

Then there are recipes to make your own or other things to use (like hummus) instead. It's fun to be creative

Well, what do you use sour cream or mayo for?

I don't eat mayo myself but I love mustard on standard things that would have mayo.

I’d say try making your own if you can’t find the store-bought variety ready made. Do you not have any health/natural/alternative food stores in your area? Even if you don’t, even mainstream grocery stores carry tofu these days. Here’s a recipe for vegan sour cream and a few for mayo. In my experience you usually have to play around with different recipes and add your own touches to get something you really like, but I like to cook and experiment in the kitchen so it’s not much of a problem for me.

Good luck and happy cooking.

The tofutti sour cream is really good. There are other brands but they have a chalky aftertaste.

I catered a vegan party once and made a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting using the fake-o tofutti cream cheese. YOU COULDN'T TELL THE DIF!

Also a wonderful, can't tell the diff substitute is the SILK soy coffee creamer.

What I have a hard time with is the other kinds of cheese subs - fake cheddar, fake mozzerella etc. My dad likes the "Follow Your Heart" brand vegan cheese and says "I can't tell the difference!" But it's only because he's so many years from having real cheese, he kind of forgot about it.

Do you have a health food store near by? I'll bet they would carry the vegannaise & tofutti products....

Another thing you could do is try oil and vinegar for some of the traditional mayo applications -- for instance, the "german style" potato salad, or Asian style cole-slaw. I prefer pasta salad with olive oil, herbs and lemon and vinegar, over the mayo.
