Default Weight Gain with Depo injection

Hi everyone

just after a little advice.... I had the contraceptive injection depo last week, it was the 1st one i have had in 10years (been having bubba's) and after reading the leaflet the doctor gave me said its common to have weight gain of around 14-16lbs..... bloody **** I don't want to gain any weight its taken me 3 months to lose 15lbs. has anyone actually had this injection and gained the weight?
Iv had the injection now and it last 3 months.... i have not been feeling any more hungry just worried all my hard work will go down the pan

I had it for several years and never had any weight gain attributable to it - just be aware and be active and you'll be fine.

My sister in law got depo shots for a number of years. During that time frame she gained 65 pounds and went from a 4 to a 16 with no increase in food consumed or decrease in exercise. Additionally, she cut her calories year over year and increased her exercise substantially as she gained weight, she was always pretty health conscious and active. Most of the gain was in the last three years. When she stopped the depo she dropped the weight within the next 6 months.

She was in her late twenties at the time, and completely credits the weight gain to the depo. That and she was seriously moody while she was on the depo.

Marie, according to my brother the mood swings were terrible in her case. I saw just a few of them and they were fierce. I wouldn't recommend the shot to anyone. My mom is a nurse, and she doesn't recommend it anymore either. She suggests an IUD, actually. I can't remember the brand name.

Good luck.

I've been having the injection since August and definitely noticed weight gain, purely because it made me hungrier.

I was on it for about 5 years for birth control as well as migraine prevention and definitely noticed the gain. Much more than 15 or so lbs. My total gain was not all due to the depo but I can say in hindsight that it was definitely, partially to blame. Also, I lost my period for like 3 years and am now worried about the fertility damage it may have done to me.

ps. I just found out that that is the drug they inject into male sex offenders to chemically castrate them... doesn't sound healthy to me. I'd get off of it if I was you!

I've had the shot for almost three months and haven't noticed any side effects aside from a barely there period. Everyone reacts differently of course, I had tried two others before and had an insatiable appetite and monster mood swings!

I was on it years ago, I did gain weight but was not bothered over what I ate either.

Its nasty though, after I stopped it, it was 11months before I got a period. I seem to recall its not good for bone density.

Ive just had my second child 2 months ago so Im going to try a copper coil, at least it can come out if its no good.

i had the depo shot for 3 years, all my weight gain was in that time but i think it was more laziness and over eating, however i think the depo was partly to blame. the weight gain was steady, when i stopped getting the shots i got an implanon. ive had an implanon for the past 8 months and havent gained any weight since then (thank god!) despite no changes to diet and exercise, so i think the depo was partly to blame else i would of kept gaining surely? unless im such a blimp that my body just cant absorb anymore fat lol.
