Default Steel Magnolias #1

Time to start a new thread and begin numbering anew for 2012.

It was in the high 60s today and sunny.

This was work at JH day and now I have a load of laundry going. Nothing exciting, that's for sure.

Faye, I hope they get you straightened out soon! I know the baby things will be beautiful.

Jean, Jesus told us to help everyone, not just the ones that belong to our particular church. I doubt I could do a tanning booth. I'd be a crisp in 30 seconds and melanomia would be breaking out all over. You'll love the book Maggie is sending you.

Maggie, I haven't had jerky for a long time but I used to like it. Maybe I should look for it again. I love the creme burle smoothies. I was hoping they would have the white peppermint again at Christmas time.

Time for some dinner - have a great evening!

Susan -- Thanks for starting the new thread for the new year! It's nice to see you tonight! Doing laundry sure isn't exciting but I think back to the days when we were first married and I hauled laundry to the laundromat on Saturday mornings. A washer and dryer were the first things we bought when we rented our first house. Do you have any quilting fun planned for the weekend? The problem with the people needing monetary help is that they think everything is "free" and the same ones keep coming back every month. The other churches have quit helping so it appears it is us and the local Catholic Church. It's frustrating for everyone.

Good morning to you all. Going commissary shopping in about an hour so thought I would get in here and post real quick before we go. I have been knitting on the hat this morning and it is killing my hands. I am having to use size 3 circs, but knitting it straight then seaming when I am done. It is harder knitting with very small circular needles rather than double points for some reason. At least it is for me. I just want to get the hat done. I am anxious to do the booties, which looks like little girls shoes and socks.

Jean: Churches just cannot do what they used to because people don't go to church and when people don't go to church there is no money to help others even if they wish to. The people that come wanting money and such don't even darken the door of a church most of the time. It is like the people here who beg on all the corners. Fact is, most of them are scammers and make more money than most people. They beg for money and have signs that say they don't have money for groceries. I have offered to take them to Mcdonalds for a meal or to the grocery store to buy a few groceries and every time they get angry because they want the cash not the groceries, so I just quit. I give my money elsewhere. One of the things I do is when we stay in hotels I clear out the free hygiene stuff everyday. Then every couple years or so, I take a bunch of those little bottles of shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, hand cream, etc, etc, to the mission or ywca. It isn't a lot, but it does provide folks with hygiene products that they need.

Susan: I was talking to Jack about the female stuff last night. My main concern is whether the procedure with actually solve the other problems. Day before yesterday, I started cramping and all of a sudden I was sweating and shaking to beat the band. I took some Advil and in about half an hour the other stuff stopped even though the cramping really didn't. So, I will be having a big discussion with the gyn next week about all of that too. I still think the main problem is hormones all over the place and I am not sure the ablation will solve anything but the bleeding, but I am going to get answers that's for sure. How is your foot coming along. You sound like you are becoming more and more mobile.

Well, I better get out of here so I can finish getting ready. Everyone have a wonderful day today. Faye

Good Morning, Flowers! The sun is trying to shine through the clouds, the breeze is slight so far, and it's a "cool" 23 degrees right now. We just flipped and turned our mattress which we try to do at least twice a year, if not four times. We really need to invest in a new set. Bob tossed and turned all last night which in turn didn't let me sleep well -- I was cold for some reason. I asked him what his problem was and he said he was writing a book to solve a problem he found in writing a new crop policy. The powers-to-be from the home office asked him to define the problem and show a solution in "simple" terms, so they could send it out to all the agents.

"Gma" -- I hope your commissary trip is short and sweet today. Sometimes I think putting things away is more work than the actual shopping. It's nice that Jack goes with you to help. Both of my grocery stores have been moving things around again. Just when I kind of know where things were, now I have to hunt again. The booties sound really cute. Be sure and share a picture of everything when you finish. The church never gives money, but will give vouchers either for gas, food, or a check mailed directly to the utility company. We take a collection once a month and it's usually around $100 which doesn't go very far.

I've got laundry going and need to vacuum 'n dust. It accumulates too fast! Have a super Saturday and enjoy whatever you are doing today!

Talking Simply Saturday

GOOD LATE MORNING MAGNOLIAS

It is a nice cool 33 right now in the Heartland and expected to get as high as 43 this day. OH that Beanie. He brought in some charcoal into the living room and chewed it up into small little pebble sizes and made quite a mess. We can't figure out where he even got it. We don't have any of that in our back yard now that we know of. If it were summer time we would know where he got it. It's a mystery and a big mess to be cleaned up. He loves bringing in small branches that have fallen off the apple tree and chews on them. Believe me he has lots of chew toys and bones and stuff but he likes wood and such. Probably some deficiency in his diet so we will be checking into that possibility.

For my first meal this day I had 2 P+ worth of jerky and a Clementine. Yummy.
I am making stuffed pork chops for dinner so will have some chicken broth and celery in the afternoon to stave off any hunger pangs I may be getting. Plan ahead and stay OP is what I am practicing. So far I have written all that I have bitten. I have already had several times I would have used that little scale that I am waiting to be delivered. I know I will get use out of it. I need to know what I am putting in my mouth or it is all for naught.

Will has not been successful in getting me some of my signature smell good spray. There is only one place in town that sells it and they aren't getting their orders filled from the warehouse. So ~ Paul is going to see if he can get it in the big city when he goes home today. A little birdie has told me that the company has changed the formula after all these years so we shall see if that is true and if it will even smell good with my chemistry. I just don't know. That is one drawback in living in this little berg ~ in Texas I could just go in Neiman Marcus and find out the scoop. I used to have a shopper in that Dallas store but she retired a few years back. She was so good in finding me "things" on sale. She would send me a huge box of wonderful samples at holiday times. But I am thankful I know someone who can get my scent elsewhere and I can at least give it a try. I have just got to smell good and one bottle of that spray lasts me a year and it is tradition I get one for Christmas each year. I do have a couple little bottles of the perfume but I prefer the spray and use very little of it and it lasts all day. Good stuff. It either smells really really good on some folks and like skunk on others. Depends on ones chemical makeup. I am hoping this new formula change goes well with my chemistry. I'll know come Monday.

DONNA FAYE The baby items you are knitting sound absolutely adorable. I know the mom will be so grateful to receive them for the little one. I love those little footies that look like shoes. They have them in catalogs and the little Mary Janes are so adorable ~ well so are the tennie runners. One of the babies at church has some Mary Janes and they look so cute with her little dress and a flower in her hair. Surely the docs can tell what all is going on with your system and start you on the mend. They have tests to give to you - oh joy. Seriously they will sort it all out and you will be on the road to recovery. The light at the end of the tunnel is getting bigger.

JEAN We have a pillow topped mattress and so it can only be rotated top to bottom around and it gets rotated regularly. But it is so comfortable. I stripped the bed when I got up today so it is sheet changing day. When I mentioned to Will that Beanie might be deficient in "something" he said, "Yeah, brain matter. He is a dog with pica behavior." That my friend is the old "Child Behavior Specialist" in him giving his diagnosis.

SUSAN Thank you for starting us out a new thread for this new year. I loved that Peppermint Smoothie mix mixed with chocolate ~ oh so yummy. Sometimes they do repeat the old ones again and I hope also that they bring back the peppermint one. I think I will write them a letter. What I would do was use one chocolate envelope and one peppermint one and some ice and water or milk and blend up two servings. Will likes it that way also. I also liked to use half envelope of the peppermint in Swiss Miss sugar free hot chocolate mix for a nice hot yummy drink. Yes I will write them a letter to please bring it back. The New Brunfels Smokehouse catalog has some jerky I plan on ordering since I like spices. It has a name of "Jalapeno Beef Jerky". Will said he didn't care how I spend my allowance!

Tips for the day:
BE SMART ABOUT SALAD
When visiting a salad bar fill your plate with veggies, greens and and top it off with one or two tablespoons of low-fat dressing. Limit the bacon bits, cheese, croutons, and creamy dressings ~ or skip them entirely. Ditto for pasta, tuna, or chicken salads swimming in mayo. If you can't resist, spoon up just a quarter-cup serving.

HAVE A BOWL OF CEREAL FOR BREAKFAST
A 2002 Welsh study found an association between eating breakfast cereal and lower levels of cortisol, a stress hormone that stokes appetite and promotes dangerous fat accumulation around the belly. Breakfast seems to blunt the effects of hormones that contribute to weight gain.

All y'all have a great afternoon and enjoy this weekend. I am looking forward to Monday which is my weigh day and see if I have lost. I have minded my p's and q's so far and expect at least a pound to be down. Type at y'all later.

Maggie -- What is your "signature smell?" I know you have mentioned it before but I have forgotten. I hope Paul is able to get it for you. Will saying that Beanie is deficient in brain matter makes me think of Leonard. I used to call him my LD cat! I pretty much abide by the salad tip of the day. However, I was surprised about the cereal. When I eat cereal I am usually hungry way before lunch time. I need some sort of protein to last the whole morning or else plan on a snack which sometimes spoils my lunch. I have a load of towels to fold and then I'm going to call it a day, catch the news, and head for bed. Tomorrow will be early because Bob has to usher so I will go in with him. Bells are playing 2nd service but play the first thing so I can leave right afterwards. The kids are serving a baked potato lunch to raise money so I won't have to cook! See you all tomorrow.

Talking Simply Sunny Sunday

GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

We had a nice church service this morning and just got in from eating a good lunch at Applebees. I had the Paradise chicken Salad which is 8 p+. Probably fewer points since I didn't use but a tiny taste of the dressing which I had them bring on the side. Brought half of it home for I could not eat it all for it was a huge amount of salad. I have learned to love my salad without dressing. I will have the rest of it for dinner this day I do believe. Right now, of course, I am sipping on a sf ff vanilla Latte which is absolutely wonderful tasting. Those gals at Moca's sure know how to make them. Not much happening in this neck of the woods this day. AH but tomorrow is weigh day!

JEAN My scent is Opium by Yves Saint Laurent. In looking on the web I can't tell that they have changed the formula but the packaging is different. I am sure Paul will bring back a bottle of it for me. I find that the Kashi cereal does last me till the next meal.

Binge-proof your day
Eating a good breakfast cuts the risk of bingeing later on - plus it revs up your metabolism, provides energy for your body and brain, and is a key strategy for weieht loss and maintenance.

Beware of dishes labeled 'light'
Many restaurants promote low-cal, good-for-you choices-but, dieter beware. Read the menu carefully. Look for a balance of lean protein (fish, chicken breat, pork tenderloin, strip steak); complex carbohydrates (brown rice, whole wheat pasta); and monounsaturated fats (canola or olive oil). If you want more information to help you choose the healthiest meals, go to the restaurant's Web site ahead of time to see if they list nutritional information for each dish.

Everyone have a lovely day.

Good Afternoon, Flowers! The sun has been in and out all day, the wind is blowing, and it's a chilly 41 degrees outside. We spent the morning at church. I sat through first service and immediately following the bell choir had to set up and practice for second service. The "dog and pony show" band was also setting up their "junk," tuning up, and being totally RUDE. Their leader was going to play her flute with us on one of our pieces; she originally thought she was going to stand by me. I voted NO saying I couldn't hear the other bells if her flute was pointed at me, so she wandered around down in front of us! I hate it when she sings or plays with us because she doesn't read music, plays by ear, and does her own thing regardless of what we are doing. I know that is talent but I wish she wouldn't do it with us! The next two months the bells won't play the same service as the band -- good thinking on somebody's part! After we played I left and we ate a baked potato lunch the kids were having for a fund raiser.

Maggie -- What is in the Paradise Chicken Salad? We haven't been to Applebee's for quite some time and I don't remember that as being one of the choices. Ah, now I remember . . . Opium! I will have to try Kashi cereal and see how that works for me. I can binge any time but I do always eat breakfast. Unfortunately, the local restaurants don't have nutrition websites although I think they are supposed to have the info if you ask for it.

I'm going to do some organizing in my bathroom cupboards and drawers so I can find things and see what I have stashed away I've forgotten about. Hope you all enjoy your evening!

Talking Back For A Bit

LATER

JEAN The Paradise Chicken Salad has grilled sliced chicken breast pieces over salad greens, shredded purple cabbage, a few mandarin orange sections & chopped green apple pieces. I really like it and always bring half of it home. The dressing they put on it is good also but since I have learned to eat mine without it I just have it on the side and taste it then leave it alone. Dotties web site has lots and lots of restaurants point+ values on it. If you can't find a particular restaurant there you can find something similar to compare it with. The new WW Dining Out Companion booklet has that salad listed under Applebees WW entres.

Type at y'all later.

Good morning ladies. I am sorry I have been sort of sporadic posting, but I am having such horrible issues with this female stuff, that it is difficult to type because my hands shake so much. Seems like everytime I have had cramping the shaking comes with it. Right now I have to stop every few words to get them back in control. I did take some Advil so I hope it will help and then I will settle down. Thursday can't come soon enough for me that's for sure. This is no way to live. I can just feel the muscles in my arms quiver as I type. I am so glad I had the A1C testing done and the other insulin blood tests and such or I would think it was something to do with diabetes, but I know it isn't that because all my tests were negative and besides that this only happens when I am cramping whether I have eaten or not eaten, etc.

Well gals, I have the hat and one bootie done and half way done on the other bootie and the sweater started so here they are. I think they are just adorable. I posted two pics so you can get a good view of them. I think those booties are just so sweet, but I have to get the rest done and get them to her before the baby would outgrow them. They say they are 3-6 months, but I think closer to the three than the six month size. My yarn for the blanket comes today so I can start on it and get it done. It will take the longest.

Maggie: People who want to lose weight are plain stupid just to trust the "40% less calories than regular," or "lite" written on anything. They should take the time to look at the nutritional info and even then it is somewhat of a guessing game. For instance, you want to eat some ff potato chips, you can either weigh them out or you can take the number of chips they say is a serving. We always weigh them because we feel this is more accurate as far as pts goes. You can only do so much, but I always ignore any queques to get you to buy something. I have a couple fragrances I love and Jack likes. I buy Donna Karan's Cashmire Mist and I like the inexpensive Sand and Sable a lot too. I love Applebee's Chinese Chicken salad. The asian dressing is to die for so I put it on the side and dip.

Jean: I don't think other instruments should play while the bells play. If you have an orchestra or whatever that is part of the piece, fine, but when other instruments play while the bells are playing, I think it takes away from that crisp clear sound the bells make as music. Won't be too long and you will be winging your way to warm breezes! We are under 40 weeks until the cruise and you can just see Jack amping up more and more. It is kind of funny as he really is excited to go on the cruise. It has to be the sailor in him. The old adage, "You can take the sailor out of the Navy, but you can't take the Navy out of the sailor," sure fits with Jack. I told him last night that my only nervousness is being out on the water and not being able to see any land. We took a day cruise on the air craft carrier once and when I went up on the flight deck I got terribly nauseous when I would look out over the water and the horizon moved so I don't know. Guess we just won't do that romantic standing by the rails together unless I have a bucket!

Well, I see Fedex just delivered my yarn. They haven't learned their lesson obviously, because he just threw it over the gate and the gate was unlocked! Have a nice beginning to your week. Faye

Talking

GOOD DAY MAGNOLIAS

It is currently 35º here in the Heartland and the talking heads say it will be between 52º and 25º. A bright sunshiney day this day in deep winter. I am a very happy camper this day for my scale was my best friend this morning. YIPEKIO I am down 3 pounds to make it a total of 75 of those rascals gone from this body of mine. Plus, get this, that enabled me to move the bottom big chunk weight over a notch to the left on my upright Health O Meter scale and the smaller on above clear over to the right. It is a happening when one of those big bottom chunks gets moved over. That really jazzed me and I surely don’t ever want it to be moved back over. I am going to celebrate by staying OP this day. I didn’t use but a couple of those weekly points allotted but they are there as a safety net for an “occasion.” We will be having grilled burgers for dinner this day served on light buns keeping the points+ value down. Going to grill outside ~ yes we are. I am varying my exercise routine for my plan is to add a new thing each week and take something out that way I will not doing the same thing week after week. But the key is to “do something.” My plan is to walk laps around the house inside and do some in place exercises with weights and stretchy bands. I have some great exercise DVD’s for my computer and play James Brown “I FEEL GOOD” on my boom box. I’ve got the tools now I need to use them. I start out nice and easy and work up so as not to injure myself. Nope, don't want any injuries.

Cecil is no dummy. He loves to scoot into the bedroom when one of us goes in there then won’t come out so we just shut the door. He is safe from Beanie bothering him when he wants to nap. He scooted in earlier when I came out and I just went in there to get my Nivea lip stuff off my night stand and he didn’t budge so I just shut the door again. Beanie is laying in the hall beside the door as I type. I am so pleased that they are such buddies.

Paul just called and he has my smell good stuff and will bring it with him this evening. He was able to get it with his wife’s discount ~ so that knocked off a few bucks and he won’t let Will pay for it. What a guy. Well, we do let him stay here. But we certainly didn’t expect that generosity from him. I love a surprise. Now I will see if it was just the packaging that changed and not the formula. They wouldn't dare change that formula ~ would they.

DONNA FAYE I know you will be dancing a jug after you get your system all fixed back to exact. You are one tough chick to have put up with this so long. Those baby things sound so cute. They will be keepers for sure. But dear, did I read you wrong ~ no pictures posted for us to see.

SPICE UP YOUR MEALS
Herbs add zip to your dinner table, without the fat and calories. Some inventive ideas: sprinkle fresh lemon, lime or orange zest over veggie or rice dishes. Or toss favorite herbs on your salad, such as tarragon or dill. When you're cooking with herbs, be sure to add them at the end to preserve their flavor.

COOK SIMPLY
Simple recipes with few ingredients can be the best for your quest to drop some pounds. Sprinkle fish with salt, pepper, and lemon juice, then grill it. Mix chili pepper, garlic, dried coriander and oregano, rub it onto meat, or cut up vegetables and grill.

I love using my grill pan to do that with veggies. However, I have found that I won't use green onions in a recipe when using that pan because they fall down into the grooves and are hard to get out so they don't lay there and burn. I learned that one the hard way.

Well Magnolias I am off to get some lunch. Type at y'all later.

Good Afternoon, Flowers! I've been trying to make the $1900+ check from the hospital match my figures for the payroll deductions. The good news is they paid me more than I had figured. I finally gave up and made the deposit. If they audit the books they can figure it out! It also took awhile at church this morning because some of the checks got in the wrong pile making us $700 short the first time we counted. Must be the weather!

"Gma" -- I just hope your gyn can figure out what to do to help you! I feel so bad that you feel so crappy! The hat and bootie is darling! The band didn't play with us, they were just setting up and tuning up for when they played during the service. It just irritates me that they were so rude when we were trying to get our practice in and then go downstairs until the service started. Did you see, on tv, the Fed Ex driver who tossed a tv over a fence? The house had a security camera that caught him in the act; of course the tv was broken and Fed Ex said they would replace it then deal with the employee. It's a good thing yarn doesn't break.

Maggie -- on losing another 3#s AND being able to move the scale weight down! Grilled hamburgers sound really good! We haven't grilled for a long time and we should be doing so in the nice "warm" weather. I could see the hat and bootie pictures just fine.

Not much else newsy in my corner of the world today. I'm thinking of going for a walk outside. Bob has practice at 5 so won't be home until later. Enjoy the rest of your day and evening!

Talking Back For A Bit

GOOD AFTERNOON MAGNOLIAS

I am so pleased that I am not having a "hungry day" and haven't had one yet this year. All I have had so far today is 2 points+ worth of jerky and some fruit and I am good to go till grilled burgers after while. OOO I smell so good. Will said this bottle doesn't smell any different than what I had before. Just a new looking bottle it came in and I like it. Smells the same to me also. I can always buy it on line if the local place here doesn't carry it anymore. However she said she was waiting for her order so we shall see but that will be awhile for this will last for many months.

JEAN Yep I can see Donna's nice knitting project fine now. For some reason when I first log on to this site the pictures don't come in sometimes. They are so cute but I never imagined them being otherwise. Send me your stats again after you have lost more pounds and I'll make you another thermometer picture each time or each weigh in if you would like. I'll continue making them for you till you reach goal if you would like. I cut mine out and laminated it and then stuck magnet paper on the back. Since this is a milestone loss for me I will have this on on my refrigerator along with all my weight loss stars. Like I said ~ I do enjoy having those visuals.

I think I need to go fix the veggies for the burgers for he has announced that the coals are lit. We have been doing dinner earlier then we were doing it last year and I think It helps in our weight loss. If I "need a snack" I have fruit.

Type at y'all later.

Good evening, ladies - 43 degrees and rain right now.

I have to work every day this week and then Saturday at WW. It's going to be a long week but I'll love taking the checks to the bank.

Faye, if this doc doesn't get you fixed, I think you should go see Dr. House. He diagnosis everything. LOL I do love that show. I hope they get you fixed soon. Love the baby things. You always do such a beautiful job.

Jean, I'm glad they are paying you for all the work you do there. I'm definitely with you on cereal leaving me hungry a short time later. It doesn't have enough protein for satiety, the carbs crash after an hour. If I have cereal, I have canadian bacon or turkey sausage with it.

Maggie, congrats on the weight loss. You are doing great.

I'm having BBQ Chicken, Baked Sweet Potato, and Broccoli for supper and it is ready. Have a great evening!

Good Morning, Flowers! It's supposed to be in the high 50s again today; at least the sun is shining and it looks promising. The cold and never ending wind arrives tomorrow. I need to make a grocery run and line up some appointments this morning. I've been sorting through tax stuff, credit card bills, etc., so need to finish that.

Maggie -- I'm so glad your "smell" is the same! More and more it seems like companies are taking out or putting in different ingredients which in turn alters the way the products work. I liked the WW bookmark but they don't give them any more.

Susan -- I hope you aren't too tired after working both jobs this week. It takes awhile to get back into a set routine. I wish I was getting paid! Actually, I'm glad I don't because I can work on my own time schedule.

I'm off to get my day started! I spent too much time watching the Today Show this morning! Hope you all have a terrific Tuesday!
