Oh Shelley I really feel for you! I guess walking doesn't help because you are away from home longer. Please don't get to discouraged.

Dee-I think I'll be able to walk because that way I'm not jostling everything inside by bouncing up and down. I don't know if that makes since or not, but I'm gonna try. Please give me some walking hints. Just how long does it take you to go 7 or 8 miles? It seems to take me forever because my stride is so short. I go as fast as I can, and don't seem to make any headway. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!!

Shelley walking definitely takes a lot longer than jogging! My stride is very short too. I am just over 5 feet so there isn't much leg to me. lol
I walk about 4 miles an hour. You probably walk a bit faster because of all the jogging you do. If I go any faster my chest pain increases so that it is unbareable. If your going at it alone wear a walkman, or you will find it to long. Do you think that you would have as much tummy problems if you walked 2/3 and jogged the rest home? All the best. Wish I could be there walking with you. I love florida. It has been unusually cold here for this time of year. Some days it doesn't even make it past freezing point. The snow that we have had melted but still feels like winter and I don't like it. I am like a bear eat and sleep. not much good for the diet but winter always gets me down because I live to be outside all the time. Oh well that is enough whining.
Good luck!

Hey there Shelley !

I've also been walking for a while (5 years) and do something called racewalking. This is out in LA. I was part of this marathon training group and got some training from a coach. She's all of 5' tall (if that) and keeps telling us that we should shorten our stride. It's all in the hip movement... reaching with your heel... keeping a relatively straight leg... and pushing off on the ball of the foot. I'm 5'5" and I've gone from an 18 minute mile to a 12.5 minute mile - although I average about a 13-14 min one these days. It great exercise for the butt, legs, stomach and arms... I hate going to the gym and don't seem to need to as long as I keep up the racewalking form (even if I don't go fast and just practice the technique). hope this helps

previous total - 66 miles
mon - stationary bike - 5 miles... eliptical stairmaster - 3 miles

Do you guys count the above and if so - how???

Patch-Thanks for the tips. I remember you saying that you did racewalking. I'll try---I just haven't been able to get the hip motion going.

Ask away Shelley - remember to go easy at first - the hip joints need to get warmed up. Sometimes it takes me 2-3 miles to warm up my legs and hip muscles.

Guys how do you count exercise like bicycling?

previous total - 66 miles
mon 10/28- stationary bike - 5 miles... eliptical stairmaster - 3 miles
Wed 10/30 - 4 mile hike... 3 mile stat. Bike

last little while I walked 8 miles
total 89.5 miles

Patch it is good to see you again. Walking in Italy that must have been some walk to get there....lol How did you like it? I count my biking as 2 miles for every 20 minutes. I know that I go further than that but I figured since it is easier than walking I would count it on the low side.

Shelley keep it up. It is ok if you are walking you are keeping active.

Hey there Deelite! Thanks big time for the biking tip.

Italy was magical. We were in the Tuscany region between the areas of Siena, Montalcino and Montepulciano. Dranks lotsa vino and ate losta pasta! The walking was incredible - I had found this walking and eating your way through Tuscany book and even got my hubby to join me on a couple of easy hikes. But they name these towns "Monte..." for a reason - we're talking mega hills. Whew! Glad we didn't book a biking tour.

previous total - 78 miles
Thur - 4 mile easy hike
new total = 82
