Spoon: my town actually also has a lot of farmers markets, but they are during the week, and I am usually pretty busy then... currently, it's easier for me to do my grocery shopping early on Sunday mornings :P I think I'll have to actually make a plan to change that

I can't do any food shopping these days, though, because at the moment, I'm trying to plan how to eat/store/freeze all of my perishable food... I'm leaving for a conference in Japan on Thursday! I'm pretty excited, cause I've never been there!

If anyone has traveled to Japan, do you have any travel tips?
I plan on eating lots of (possibly strange) fish and vegetables, and go easy on the rice...

How fun! The weight loss is important but definitely take advantage of the strange foods! Including candies!

Oh, I am so looking forward to the strange candies... I always stare at them at the Asian supermarkets... :P

I'll be back in the beginning of August. Have a great OP rest of the month, everyone!!

Just found this thread and am so excited to find other grad students. I am in the final leg of grad school. Getting my MA in Comm Studies. I have one class left in the fall and then comprehensive exams in November. I can't wait to be finished. I have loved going to school but it's been a tough road. I doubled up my classes to get done quicker and work full-time with 2 boys and the hubby. I am ready to refocus on me and my health. The added stress has not helped my weight. Thanks for starting this thread.

Love - I see them a few nights a week via Skype - but the 3 hour time difference kills. We have been apart for 53 days... but they are flying out here next week, just in time for me to finish up my rotation

I too love being a grad student - but honestly, i am ready to finish up and move on!

Hi all! Just found this thread -
Grad students unite! I am in the final year of a biomedical PhD, I already have a medical degree and completed residency training but for some odd reason I came back for more. And stress is a huge hindrance to healthy eating, especially lately - just found out I have less than a year 'til my funding is cut off so now the clock is REALLY ticking. I was hoping to take 4 years total but now it has to be 3.5 so here goes nothing.

I try to eat following Eat to Live guidelines - mostly vegan with a bit of fish, tons of produce etc. I grow as much of my own produce as I can and get the rest from local stands so this at least is a cheap way to go. I want to have my own chickens for eggs (I don't like to buy them, hens are treated so badly at most places) but the county said my backyard is 2 feet too small to permit a chicken coop - curse them! I may do it anyway and have Secret Chickens.

JayZJay, that is really cool that you grow your own food. After watching Food Inc. me and the +1 decided to buy from a local farmers co-op.

I will be starting my MBA in August and I usually gain weight when I am in school or start a new job; I go all in. I also travel quite a bit for work and I have really loss myself in my career. This time with the help of 3FC I will stay reminded that my health and well being should come first.

Thanks to everyone for sharing.

All the best

Hey all,

I have also just found this thread! I'm in the first year of my PhD in Psychology (Clinical). It's nice to find other grad students on here. For me, with my current lifestyle, there are a couple of things that I personally find quite challenging, with regards to weight loss!

Firstly, it's just the whole snacky/going out for meals thing that is fun to do with friends in my office/department. A lot of people make regular trips to the vending machine, and we go out for food fairly regularly and socialise a lot together, so it's hard to always make sensible choices there!

Secondly, I also live with my boyfriend, and whilst I always take lunch to university with me, it can be hard to create healthy, low-calorie meals at dinner time, as he isn't trying to lose weight at all (he is very slim). Instead I've tried to just focus on portion control (for ages I just served us up the exact same portion, this has to stop!).

Like some other people in this thread, I really love the idea of growing my own veggies and having chickens, but I live in a flat with no outside space, so for now, this can't really happen. I can't wait until I get a house with a small yard or garden!

I just found this thread...

I'm starting Law School next month and in about a week I'm moving to Ohio...I however refuse to change my profile to say I actually live in Ohio haha...My heart is in Maryland.

My boyfriend is actually going to the same school but we wont be living together but I assume that this will mean more time together and hopefully he is willing to eat my healthy cooking lol.

I'm worried about the lack of time and maintaining all of my hardwork but I started this lifestyle while still in undergrad full time and working full time with a research project on the side so I think I'll be ok.

Good luck!

Hey there!

I'm so glad this support group popped up in the new posts. I'm a 5th year in an experimental psychology Ph.D. program. I'm hoping to finish in 1-2 years from now.

I am probably 15-20 pounds below the weight I started at when I began grad school 4 years ago (I've lost 70ish pounds overall). That being said, I gained 60 pounds or so during the first 4 years of school! Although I am really happy in the program, I was in a really unhealthy relationship with an alcoholic. I think I ate my sadness and developed quite a strong addictive relationship with food that I continue to battle (can you tell I'm in psychology?!?).

Anyway, I'm glad this support group was started and would love to share tips on healthy lifestyles in grad school. I found that, for me, a huge help is bringing all my food--including snacks--with me for the day and sticking to that. My lab has snacks all around, so if I set that as a rule, I'm better off. Also, I often bring workout clothes with me to school so that I'm more likely to go to the gym even if I stay later than I thought in the lab.

One weird thing for me is that I've found it is MUCH harder to stay on my diet when I work from home. While on one hand, I love the flexibility of being able to write my stuff at home...the snacking cravings are SO much stronger. So, I sometimes force myself to go into school to work in my office, even though I'd rather stay comfy and focused at home.

Good luck this week staying on the diet!

Hello all, I am starting my 2nd year of an MBA program, and I am doing it through an online program. It has been really hard, cause I am home at the computer almost all day. I do have a part time job, but it is really an on-call position.

Haley, Ohio is a great state! I have lived here my whole life. (Although I will admit some parts are better than others.)

Nice to meet all of you.

Oh, very cool!

So I'm came back from Japan, in one (heavily-jetlagged) piece, and I find all these posts in the grad student thread - love it!

I'm glad you guys are doing so well with your healthy eating habits!

Unfortunately, I gained a little in the past 14 days. In hindsight, it was all these amazing desserts they have over there, and don't get me started on the candy... -_- oh well, no use crying about it now, the only thing I can do is get back on the wagon

One thing, by the way, was very noticeable: I saw very few overweight Japanese people! Everyone was somehow stick-thin... this really served as a visual reminder that I should lose some weight :P

Also, I got inspired and got myself a copy of "Why Japanese Women don't get Old or Fat." I figured, I liked the Japanese food so much over there, that I can at least get some Japanese recipes out of it

If anyone has read it, let me know how you liked it (I haven't gotten past the first chapter yet)

Well, I have one more day tomorrow to try to adjust to American life again, and then I'm going back to the office on Monday to pick up research where it left off...

Have a good weekend, everyone!

Hi all. I will be starting my 3rd year of law school in a few weeks. I have a very busy full time job, so go to school part time. It is hard to fit in needed workouts during school, and I tend to use food to stay awake, since I can't get enough sleep.

Love it though
