"Every-Day" 21-Day Challenge -- Let's get serious!

Okay, everyone, as is the tradition, I start a new thread when I personally start a new challenge.

Below is a short explanation of how this challenge works so all you newcomers can take a look and decide if you're game or not! I hope you are! Hop aboard and enjoy the ride. We've got a great bunch of supportive people, so I hope you'll give us a try. A lot of people try for a while and then disappear.. I hope some of you will keep trying. There is NO shame in starting over. Remember, it's not over till you give up. And our motto around here is:

NEVER GIVE UP!!...Just start OVER!!

EXPLANATION AND RULES:

It works like this: you decide you'll do something for 21 days straight, every single day, so keep it doable. Then you count ....one through 21.....and if you flub it, you MUST go back to zero and start over again. Everyone will be on different days. You can start anytime. At the beginning of the challenge you declare what level it is -- Level 1, 2, or 3. Level 1 means you feel it's a relatively easy challenge for you and means you only give yourself ONE pause day (see explanation of pause days below). Level 2 would give you two pause days and so on...
And taking NO pause days is what I'm going to call "aceing a challenge," as in "I'm aiming on aceing this one!" Yowzah!! :cb:

With a pause day you pause in your counting and continue the next day with the number you left off with. Pause days are NOT substitutes for days, i.e. Day 12 -- Day 13 -- Pause Day -- Day 14..... I suggest taking a pause day late in the game (better to go back to Day 1 early on) if you need a break or screw up when you're well into the challenge, meaning, when you're on Day 15 or something like that.

In any case, the trick is to keep going. The momentum builds and it's great incentive to stick to your guns, cause if you don't.........back to START you go. :( And the really great thing about this challenge is that you are forming new habits that will wipe out the old! AND, you get to do it with a great bunch of really supportive people to whom you are accountable! :grouphug:

THREAD GUIDELINES:

In the interest of maintaining structure, a sense of solidarity and facilitating support I ask anyone who wishes to join this thread to please strive to follow the following guidelines while participating in this challenge and in posting.

1. Although this is a fabulous support group, the focus is to be on your CHALLENGE/S and/or other people's challenge/s AND weight loss, whether your challenge is about it or not. Please keep the challenge a priority, although we welcome chattiness! This means tell us what day you're on when you post and it's a good idea to make regular mention of just what your challenge is. This an action-based thread. Our members are ON a challenge, RESTARTING a challenge, or just in between and looking to start up again REAL SOON. ;) We also welcome posts from admirers, encouragers, and old friends!

2. Please refrain from posting food logs or recipes, except where you are really looking for help and advice on your eating. If journaling is your challenge, please keep the journaling off the thread and in a notebook or blog and just tell us if you've done what you set out to do. We have ALL types of dieters here, low-carb, high-carb, low-fat, high-fat, vegetarians, meat-lovers...please use simple mentions if you have something you want to share and then links and/or private messages to do so.

3. Please do NOT go into glowing accounts of any slipups, food indulgences or binges, what we here call "food porn." Simple mentions are fine, but use of smilies :censored: :tape: etc. as substitutes where possible is encouraged.

4. Please keep this a secular thread. Of course, passing references to your beliefs, a bit of introduction about your beliefs, brief faith-related words of encouragement are fine.

5. Please show support, support, support! This is key. :grouphug: You can waffle on about yourself but please, at least occasionally, come up and look around at others and what they are doing and MENTION it with words of encouragement and/or praise or sympathy. We understand "busy," poor computer connections, and bouts of self-pity and life problems where the focus turns to "me" and dealing with those problems, but these should be temporary, not a habit! ('cept in the computer case.)

In conclusion, let me say, the above are just that, GUIDELINES. Please realize that these guidelines have been added in an attempt to keep this a supportive and beneficial thread, at the LEAST, to those who need it MOST, those for whom weight loss is the hardest and, more often than not, the most crucial as well as for those who still, perhaps despite great success, know all too well that the road they walk will always be a slippery one. :^:

The guidelines are also meant to cultivate an atmosphere of consideration and concern for ALL, not individually, but AS A GROUP.

Well, all's said. Please join us!!

In the starting blocks....

I've started a lot of these threads and this is the FIRST time I've used an angry face in the title. It's not pleasant looking (well...that's why it's angry) but it means I mean business!!
Anyone who wants/needs/aspires to meaning business, please join me!!
See you here!!

Oh, yeah, my challenge.
I'm declaring THE NO. 1 BIG ONE for me -- Calorie counting
I'll be sticking to my usual plan of 1,500 calories plus exercise allotment according to MY PLAN. It works when I follow it...as is the way often with plans ;) Three pauses are allowed. Here we go on Day 1...up and at 'em!!! :dancer:

Caleighsmommy 03-26-2009 09:41 PM

Redballoon, I think this is an awesome idea!!
My challenge is going to exercise at least 30 mins everyday, I usually do it for 2-3 days then stop for a few days and so on but I think this will be a great way to motivate me to keep it up :)
Three pauses allowed for me, even though I hope I don't need them!
Good luck with your challenge!!!!
Day 1 done :D

redballoon 03-27-2009 07:21 AM

Caleighsmommy, hello! Good to have you join us. You sound like you have one tough challenge! Best of luck!! :goodluck:

Apple Blossom 03-27-2009 07:16 PM

Day 9 completed, run! 1 pause left.
New thread! That's always good news, it means Red has had success, she's on a roll! Keep it going Red!!
And hello to Caleighsmommy! Thanks for joining us. The more folks we have here the better. Encouragement and advice from different points of view are always appreciated. You chose a great challenge, and since you're already in the habit, stringing on a few more days will be easy!
I was reading a post last night from the success! forum and the chick brought up the fact that for her, just some extra exercise wasn't enough. She really needed to change her eating habits. And while I wish I could just exercise the extra calories away, I guess I really have to limit what's going in. So I'll be counting calories, and for an extra food challenge, no dessert items AT ALL. And guess what? I have 2 social events coming up this week-end that might prove to be difficult to avoid dessert, so I'm starting those challenges on Sunday. I'll start practicing the calorie counting anyway....

redballoon 03-27-2009 09:23 PM

still on the launch pad....

Well, I do NOT have liftoff. :( I was doing so well last week, four days sticking to my plan and exercising like a fiend. Then, the swollen face, swollen eyelids, wrinkles like a 100-year-old set in and I crashed. I mean, who wouldn't? It's supposed to be about looking better, not looking worse. Allergies, pms, worries and disappointments with my horse, I guess it all came together to do it on top of having actually lost weight and my body being exhausted. Why has it become so difficult? I guess this is truly what age does to you. Just when you start to get things together (after a lifetime!) your body changes on you again. Oh well, I'll just have to learn from this, despite being disgusted that I am once again back at the start. Why does it have to be so difficult for me? Damn, I am really disgusted with the whole thing. You would think I could get it right.

Well, enough of the rant. I can see I have to get off sugar again. Once I start counting calories it's not long before I start saying, "Oh, OK, as long as the calorie count is OK, it's all OK and that's not true." The body can't repair the damage from exercise with chocolate bars. Enough!

Here's to trying again. I'm going to specify my challenges later...

**************

Apple -- Good to see you over here! Well, I had success but it was just the apple. I shouldn't belittle it though. I didn't even bother to eat it yesterday and instead continued on my binge. So, maybe it does help as I said it did. You see, the first thing to go are the things you said did help. What a loser I am. Well, good luck on your new challenges. I'm going to be doing some similar ones again, like no sugar. Will announce them later.

Caleigh -- How are you doing? :listen:

redballoon 03-28-2009 06:58 AM

these are they...

Well, I've decided to alter my challenge. Counting to 1,500 is still too hard for me AND, what's worse is that I fear I will give up eating good food just because of the calories. I will AIM for the kind of calorie count that will let me lose weight but I will not call it a failure (i.e. not be able to notch a day) if I go over a certain number. Even during the short time I was actually sticking to a count, I started learning how to measure and calculate..ah, "learning" is not the word, rather I started DOING it.

Also, I am continuing the apple challenge because I think it really did keep me thinking ahead about food instead of just stuffing whatever I found along the way into my mouth.

Also...drum roll....I am doing a no sugar, no highly processed foods (that means snacks and such) challenge again.

Here we go! :spin:

:trampo:

redballoon 03-28-2009 05:43 PM

Pretty good day here. Ate too much but at least I steered clear off sugar (and it didn't run out and hit me!) Had the apple too and wish now I had bought one for today so I could get it cut and packed early. Good point to remember...

Day 2 on No Sugar Challenge complete

Day 2 on Apple Challenge complete

**************

Saramommy -- Welcome to the challenge! :welcome: Tough challenge! Are the workout and dessert one challenge, meaning if you blow one you are going to have to take a pause or start over, or are they separate factors? Congrats on a successful liftoff!! :cp:

Apple Blossom 03-29-2009 06:55 PM

Day 11 completed, run! 1 pause left.
No Dessert type food, on the blocks, 2 pauses allowed
I guess I missed posting yesterday. Ooops. Well, I was going to start the no desserts today but I already goofed. So tomorrow for sure. I don't think the calorie count will be an actual challenge. Maybe I'll call it a "Good Choices" challenge. I'll keep mulling that one over.
Good to see you here, Saramommy. We'll be on this no desserts together. It should be a piece of cake....hahahahah:rofl:
Red, maybe your body just doesn't like change. So stick to it!!!

Saramommy 03-29-2009 06:58 PM

I hadn't really thought about it...I think I'll have them as two separate challenges, if that's okay.

Day 1 & Day 2 on exercise - Complete

Day 1 & Day 2 on NO desserts - complete

redballoon 03-29-2009 07:19 PM

Apple -- There you are! I had to laugh at your "maybe your body just doesn't like change." My entire being doesn't like change! I was just thinking that as I was making vegetable juice and thinking I should start a Change Challenge. It's true. I am a creature (and you can take that literally) of habit. The same hairstyle, the same clothes, the same foods, the same living place, work, everything I do is about routine and habit and, obviously, at least some of that has got to change if I want to see changes. Ah, duh...
But I guess that's what you could call new habits. They are changes. My apple a day certainly was a change and I like it. And you know, actually your earlier joke was probably useful in that I should or could make it a daily ANYthing and it would help. I should probably pick some fruit coming into season and do that for three weeks. But, for now, I'll still make it an apple. Anyhow, enough of me...
You are doing grand!! :flow1: How did you get to Day 11 already? :?: Get on that dessert challenge..she says, she whom it took weeks to get back on no sugar. ;) I like the Good Choices Challenge. It's kind of what I'm doing with mine.
Ok, later!

Sara -- Fine on separating them. The other way is just too discouraging if you slip up. Good luck!

Saramommy 03-29-2009 10:21 PM

Hi all,
Although, I feel like I'm doing great with my two challenges (only 2 days in, haha). I feel like I need to eliminate something else out of my diet.

So, my 3rd challenge starting tomorrow will be NO BAD FAST FOOD. To clarify, a healthy menu item is okay (salad, turkey subway sandwich). NO HAMBURGERS, NO FRENCH FRIES, etc...:nono:

So now my challenge is this:

Exercise daily - DAY 2

NO desserts - DAY 2

NO BAD FAST FOOD - Starts tomorrow 3/30/09

So there ya have it!!:crossed:
